Miles Davis!

I am listening to Miles davis's "Miles In the Sky" as I write this and I am just amazed by its beauty.

Every 3 to six months I listen to Bitches Brew and have my mind blown again and again by his genius and the talent of the musicians he surrounded himself with for all of his albums.

I have to say though I "dig" his "electric" period the most-
1969 through 1975

The don. I mainly listen to sketches of spain, bitches brew and the birth of the cool. I'm not familiar with all of his work though, which is something I hope to remedy in the future.

lucky my dad was a real jazz head, got tons of filthy vinyl about the house.

Wicked thread

Was delighted to find out the other night that boom was a miles fan - and last night that SDU was!

Listening to Cabaret Voltaire when I was 13 / 14 got me into Miles, and I binged on the electronic period.

My fave now is Porgy, though I've been listening to Bitches Brew (esp) and On The Corner (ummmm bit too out of time in places!!) an awful lot in the last month or so. I really like the Bill Laswell remix album, Panthalassa, would love it if he could do all of the late 60s / 70s albums. I really like Get Up With It too, though it's dark as fuck. I know a lot of people don't like Decoy, but I still really like it, would like to refix some of that...

theyre my all times. then theres Blue Train ... 'an exploration in simplicity'
doesnt possess the tone or the 'sheets of sound' bollocks that adds so much depth to his future pieces. i find it borin at times.

Yeah, got given a Love Supreme for my birthday the other week - I share the same birthday as Trane (if not the musical ability). I think he's the jazz guy that you don't have to be mad into jazz to enjoy (plenty of others I know)

i wouldnt say that. i think all coltranes atlantic material can be listened to by anybody. i havent heard much jazz that would appeal to everybody. some english boppers share similar soulful tones.... the ornette coleman sound-a-like Joe Harriott for example... wouldnt say there was plenty of others though

Yeah, that was a bit of a dim post to be honest, some stuff is just going to appeal to jazz heads, but Coltrane seems to be liked by most I've played it to (admittedly the Atlantic stuff like you say). Some of Charles Mingus stuff seems to go down quite well, I think it's all good as long as they don't separate the heart from the art and go off into mad, jazz noodle
hell.

Unless of course they like mad, jazz noodle hell in which case all's good.

The only problem I ever have is that I have a general aversion to soprano sax, so even though Wayne Shorter is a very fine musician, his parts turn me off.
