Post by naroja » Thu May 28, 2009 7:23 am

Yo guys, anyone seen / have any transformers samples floatin around? I have a few, but I'm looking for some clean ones from the new movie. Looking for some nice mechanical gyrations, clicks, etc.

Thanks!

easiest way i reckon is to find it on youtube or some film site and put an aux cable from the audio output of your computer into the mic input. Then hit record in Audacity and play the clip

Hell yeah!

Optimus Grime - 'Annihilation Of The Ego' is one of my favourite dubstep tracks ever.

i have some pretty exclusive samples that i bumped from the post production place i was working at when the first one came out cos we did the movie promo.

Like that sick reversed sucking type noise that plays at the bit when all the robots are fighting, the one thats the tank shoots a missile and one of the good ones dodges it in slow mo. that one thats like "nyub nyub nyyyyuuuub"

i'm afraid i'm not going to be posting any of them up though as its pretty rare to have samples that only i have use of.

no help to you i know, i just fancied a gloat. enjoy using the samples everyone else has access to mate 8)

I like to put youtube into the high quality mode for the video, then rip it. Bitrate for voice alone can be a lot lower than music and sound fine, also I'm going to be degrading it and adding reverb/delay anyway.

Sound designers often use a mix of manipulated recordings and processing... see for example this video about how the sound designer created the original Star Wars lightsabers' buzz/hum noises.

So maybe the "transforming" sound is like a recording of a washing machine or motor or turbine or anything similar revving up, which is then frequency-shifted and pitched down a bit... then they'd layer the metallic clicks etc. on top, and then run the whole lot through some effects?

Anyway, start conceptualizing sound design like that and you can invent something even better! :)

'apparently' the transformer noise (well the original oldskool 80s version) was made by getting two polystyrene cups inside one another and twisting, then slowing it down.

Old school sound design is great. the indiana jones big boulder rumble was a car on gravel slowed down.

I really should do more with this. A cheap mic and some imagination and you can make an infinty of original noises.
