I remember reading in an interview with I think maybe Chris Clark (as in warp records) saying that if he tries to make music after smoking weed he just ends up spending hours zoning out listening to ambient sounds he's made which then turn out to be boring as shit once he's sobered back up.

The best mixing engineers have the song at max level throughout without compression or limiting (apart from where the song needs to be a bit quieter).

So my tip for this thread is to mix the song as best as possible, then mix each stanza (section) via automation to bring emphasis to parts that need it in that section.

I think it's a big flaw if you can't.

I remember skream saying once that once he's made a tune he smokes a J to hear it from a different perspective, which he likens to him being the listener. Allows you to get past what you've ingrained through hours of composing and mixing.

When I make beats at night I usually have a drink.

Not because I need it to make beats, but because I like to unwind at the end of the day.

1. tip

don't be afraid to delete sounds you pick in the beginning of the track. Sometimes you didn't got the sounds right in the beginning. Keep evolve the sounds constantly till you think its right.

People are mostly afraid to do this imho.

2. tip

This might not work for everybody but i like to make the whole track without the bassline and make the bass on the end. This means you'll get the whole arrangement done and have lots of melodical stuff. You'll notice that your tune only exists out of bass when you want a banger. Try this with just melodics for a time. Bass is just a fundemental of energy ... melody's and harmonys's means emotion imho.

when makeing sounds on a synth, break the sound up in to bits. ie when making a plucked instrument sound, think of the string being struck and the "twang" sound it makes. then think about the string vibrating after being hit. then the body of the instrument vibrating. then you can think about things like the room it is in and effects it could be sent to ect. now you put all these little bits together to make one big full sound witch should sound better then one layer you have been tweaking for hours. you can use this for leads, drums, bass, pads and what ever eles you like. this is not only useful when trying to make real instrument sound. the really fun starts when you mix and match bits that dont normally go together. also when listening to sounds in music try to break them up in to little bits this should help give you a idea how they where made. i think this way of thinking has help me made the sounds in my head faster and better and gave me a lot better understanding of sound. hope this helps the "how do i make this" crew. ok thats my little tip.

tl:dr when makeing and listening to sounds break them up in to bits

i might post here every friday

happy production all

step 9 wake up
step 10 catch yourself as you fall over walking to bathroom
step 11 vomit
step 12 evacuate bowls
repeat steps 11 and 12 five or six times
step 13 writhe in agony on bathroom floor for an hour or two
step 14 call ambulence
step 15 spend day in hospital in mortal agony
step 16 rip out IV and attempt to find stairwell to roof to end pain
step 17 realize that too many people depend on you
step 18 try to sneak out of hospital w/o giving your name
step 19 spend the next ten days living off of water and white rice
step 20 stop drinking starter fluid
