Distortion AU plugins (mac/logic etc)

Post by wil blaze » Fri May 29, 2009 11:34 pm

So... i'm really not getting much joy out of the bundled distortion plugins in logic 8... they just don't seem to be doing what i want...

I got the massey tape head plugin which is nice, but that's more saturation than distortion... what are u logic heads using?

There are so many good ones!

CamelCrusher by Camel Audio is very solid, use it alot

Vinyl by Izotope for a different flavor, not technically distortion tho

Degrade by mda is a better Bitcrusher than Apple's, although I use them both

All of these are free... if you want to spend I'm sure the premium version of CamelCrusher would be even better.

Also don't forget the GuitarAmpPro distortions... turn off the spring reverb etc and try the different amps with Speaker set to "DI box" or w/e.

All the free distortion plugins listed in this thread here ---> http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight=

You could use FXpansion VST to AU wrapper if needed.

I Love the logic distys
Ohmocide is really tweakable if you're having trouble finding the right fuzz purely because its split into 4 frequency bands - it has loads of inspiring presets too

I end up combining distortions a lot of the time and it always seems to be a vst with one of the logic ones
also layering the same part can give good results - with a subtle phaser perhaps (im not talking the generic midrange bass layering but real subtle low volume layers of diferent distortion techniques)

cranking the knee up on a vintiage warmer is handy too

so many different variations to experiment with when it comes to distortion tho
dont think I have ever used one distortion plugin on its own and thought 'that's the sound im after'

anyone else reckon the bitcrusher in logic 8 has been competely castrated compared to the one in 5.5? that was savage!

in fact, is there a separate download of the 5.5 version anywhere?

Cool... thanks for all the tips...

I agree it's rare to use a single distortion plugin on it's own... and that the way fwd is normally lost of subtle processing in different ways.

I'll check out some of the free ones mentioned before i reach for the credit card again lol

TAL Tube, probably the nicest, rawest distortion, thats free.

download it off the togu audio line website...

or use an amp simulator... thats what i use sometimes.. the best ones are ones that you can set the amp sim ti DI... gives nice tone
