Yeah man, Japan is mad like that, i`m currently working on a photographic project on Japan as a society of contrast.Plasticman wrote:Walking through the hustle and bustle of one of the busiest cities imaginable, straight into the serenity of a beautiful temple.
This is also one of my favorite things about this place, the extremely high level of care and attention customers/guests receive.Plasticman wrote:People really know how to look after you out there too - I loved the respect people had for human beings over there - everyone seems so polite to everyone.
I doubt i will be able to readapt to the the kinda shite service we get in london.

Just out of curiosity, what is the appeal of Japan? I have been there, and it is nice, but it seems like there is something among the electronic music head peeps that makes them all want to go Japan. It seems kinda 80's, really. Don't get me wrong, Japan is nice and all, but it seems like if peeps were into the sort of futrure-asia thing, China would surely be the place to look. Maybe I am biased, having lived in China for years. Seems like all the Japanese kids I know are trying to move to China, though.

many people have this "blade runner" kind of view of japan. i never saw it like that. when i was there i was just blown away at how hard people work ( 15-18 hour work days) and how law abiding people are there. people cross the streets on command, they're willing to queue up while waiting for a subway to arrive. they're extremely superstitious, and have a real respect for elders and ancestors.municiple wrote:It seems kinda 80's, really.
it's a huge contrast between old and new, all mixed up into one place. fascinating.

Speaking from a personal pov, i think that a large number of people`s interest in Japan might stem from the [possibly] average age of the posters. Municiple, you mention the 80`s, well i`m an 80`s child, which in turn puts me in the group that got interested in the early days of Nintendo/Sega and early imports of anime (at the time viewed as cartoons with violence, what 12 year old would say no?). I`m not saying that these things directly lead towards a direct interest in Japan but at a certain age i pieced all of my interests from my youth together and thought Japan might be a good place for me to go, i then gave up on the far more complex Chinese language i was attempting at the time (another reason maybe people choose Japan over China, easier language) and focussed my attention on being a dappa speaker of Japanese.
I always wanted to go and live somewhere in Asia due to the differing lifestyles of the west and Japan was the country that suited my interests and abilities the most.
Apologies if this post lacks structure/seems a bit random, it`s the wee hours of the morn and i`m beyond kaned. Big up to the kaned masive!!!

Time to take some pre-kip paracetomol!
Btw, if you come to Japan BRING FUCKLOADS OF PARACETOMOL WITH YOU!!!
The closest they have to it here is called BUFFERIN and it costs about a fiver a pack! If you drink sake/shochu on the regs one of those packs doesn`t last long at all.

Bufferin's as effective as doing nothing agreed, but you can get Nurofen, Eve or Tylenol anywhere. They'll know the word "ibuprofen" down the chemist shop, but katakana up the pronunciation to "ibu" not "eye-bah".DJ Sinc Vision wrote:Time to take some pre-kip paracetomol!

Personally speaking I came to Japan because when I was 12 years old I went to a children's camp in central Japan during the summer. I had no idea about Japan before that. In that year the charity that ran the camps had 3 - France, Germany and Japan. I wasn't bothered which one I went to, but the costs for all three camps were pooled - if you went to France your parents were paying an exorbatent fee, but if you went to Japan it was a very cheap month. Stuck my hand into the hat, picked out a piece of paper, it said "Japan" on it. My parents were very pleased! So off I went with 3 other British kids and one adult and had a month in Nagoya living it up (Nagashima Spa Land - your time!). Since then I always had the idea I'd come back eventually.

Plasticman... In China I would do Beijing first... it is the heart of the music scene and the artistic community, sort of like Berlin in Asia. Low rents, and people can live as artists. Shanghai is nice too, very modern, but more economy driven than culture driven. Hong Kong is great, but has kinda fallen off now that Mainland China is dominating economically. Most people I know from Hong Kong have all moved to BJ or SH.
If you are gonna head there PM and I will give you some connects.

I'm thinking either Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yokohama or somewhere.
This thread kinda inspired the trip! I need to get back out there again soon
