So I'm getting turntables but...
Dubstep is made up of many great unknown artists (dub section on these forums for example) and these guys don't have labels and just release 320 mp3 downloads. Even a lot of the big artsist only give their music away as an mp3...
So what do you DJs do if you play vinyl. Do you just have to accept that you can only play a certain amount of the bigger artists tunes? I know you might say that some tunes are only released on vinyl, but you can burn that to MP3 and play that pretty easily. Or do you include a laptop aswell as turntables?
Yes I know that vinyl is techincally better quality but I'm not sure that makes up for the lack of freedom in the songs you miss out on mixing. Don't get me wrong. I love vinyl. I love collecting music - I guess that's the main reason I like it.
So I don't really know much about djing (as in the music selection part) so I was wandering your thoughts on this...

If you can afford every tune you want that is available on vinyl then fair play to you! You can always get your turntables and invest in serato, then you get the best of both words, digital and analogue. Would myself invest in serato but spend too damn much on vinyl to afford it. But I'd never foresake vinyl altogether or use digital predominantly. There's just something about vinyl.

Ah sorry I wrote that in a bit of a hurry. I didn't mean all their tracks I meant a few.dubstee wrote:Alty wrote:Even a lot of the big artsist only give their music away as an mp3...
And MoRiGaMi, no way can I afford it all on vinyl, and I am spoilt for choice with it, however I do like tracks that can only be downloaded sometimes equally as much, and they're also often free downloads.

Back in the dayz we used to sit cross legged in a circle at DMZ and signal the DJ with joss sticks.

Same way as Serato. You use special vinyl that plays whatever mp3 you happen to have loaded in Traktor on your laptop.JMS wrote:im looking to get some Technics SL1210Mk2's.collige wrote:Get Serato or Traktor Scratch

I was going along the lines of the whole point of analogue is the warmth and decent quality. But it's always nice to know I can rely on someone on here to give an articulate and intelligent reply.computer rock wrote:you can play your mum's frank zappa recordsAkilles wrote:...what analogue bonuses do you get exactly?MoRiGaMi wrote:invest in serato, then you get the best of both words, digital and analogue.

Yeah but if he's forking out somewhere in the region of £200 for serato anyway, not much point in buying vinyl as well.MoRiGaMi wrote:...turntables for analogue, serato for digital.Akilles wrote:...what analogue bonuses do you get exactly?MoRiGaMi wrote:invest in serato, then you get the best of both words, digital and analogue.

Im in what sounds like the same boat as you. Definitely one for vinyl collecting, but at the same time yeah, theres plenty of unreleased stuff out there that deserves a play as much as anything else! Aswell as starting to produce your own etc.
Anyway, ive always just been straight two 1210's, but when I started my subfm show figured I definitely want to be playing my unreleased stuff, so just picked up a bargain basement cdj off ebay. Spend a while watching it and you can always pick up a bargain. Im more than happy with mine (simple, but gets the job done nicely) and set me back less than 70 quid I think.
Im dead happy now
My suggestion!

Re: So I'm getting turntables but...
It can get annoying. While, I've only got a handful of dubstep tunes in digital format that I'd like on vinyl, there's a lot of grime, funky and hip hop that I simply can't play, because the tunes that I want are only available digitally.Alty wrote:So what do you DJs do if you play vinyl. Sometimes I consider ditching the vinyl turntables for some CDJs, and ripping any vinyl-only releases. It's very cheap to digitise vinyl, while going the other way (i.e. getting dubplates of your favourite MP3s cut) is so expensive that, unless you're a professional who gets big booking fees, it's something that you're not really going to do.
One of the great advantages of downloads is that you don't have to race to buy tunes when they're released: there's no limit to the number of copies of a digital track that can be sold. This can help your cashflow
