DJs / Producers Who Bridge The Gap
DJs / Producers Who Bridge The Gap
I'm tired of "deep" this and "jump up" that. There is so much more variety in dubstep, still, and just because some people are pulling in certain directions doesn't mean that the bulk has to be written off as one sub-genre or the other...
Coki... Brackles... Skream... Oneman... Benga... Mala... Plastician... Joker... Time... Kryptic Minds... Jakes... Silkie... all these in their productions or DJ sets are heavy and hard enough for the ravers AND have the detail and SPACE for the bassweight meditation... Those are just named picked out at random - who, for you, is pulling things together instead of apart, please?

Its not so much the producers, but the DJs who are able to represent alot of different styles in the same set and progress a mix or a club night to showcase it all, rather than buying up all the same style dubs and representing just a microcosm of the sound.
The producer is the maker, and the DJ is the presenter.
The producer is the maker, and the DJ is the presenter.

I agree. I've seen a few sick loefah sets recently. Playing across the board.

A good DJ is not just somebody who can represent something they believe to be good but also somebody who has as broad a horizon of good music so that they can adapt and entertain any crowd, no matter how diverse or discerning.

as far as the US goes, people like Joe Nice & Hellfire Machina take you on a journey when you hear them play. Too many DJ's turn up to there gigs and play the biggest tunes they have in their box from start to finish, B o r i n g . . .

Thats taking it out of concept slightly. We're talking about playing at dubstep nights.ihatefakers wrote:this is either ridiculous or genius!!Plastician wrote:A good DJ is not just somebody who can represent something they believe to be good but also somebody who has as broad a horizon of good music so that they can adapt and entertain any crowd, no matter how diverse or discerning.

but I think if a DJ chooses to just play one style of dubstep they can still be a good DJ.
and just becuase a certain crowd does not paticulary love what DJ is playing it doesnt mean they are definately not a good DJ.
not all DJs are party DJs that play in order to entertain a crowd. some DJs are more arragant and just play what they want to hear themselves, but it my personal opinion they can still be good DJs
but i understand what your saying is that a truely good DJ should be able to have something in their bags to please any crowd and be diverse
i disagree. if you're rinsing out one sound, the crowd all fuck off to the bar, and you carry on rinsing the same sound, you're a shit DJ!ihatefakers wrote:ok fareenoughPlastician wrote:Thats taking it out of concept slightly. Agree... Sometimes you'll hear dj's "forcing" a certain sound, in order to "educate" the crowd. Wich is bollocks...
Not talking about big name dj's / producers here though, cause their sound is known and so the crowd actually comes to listen to that sound.
A good DJ, imho, will try to entertain a crowd by trying out a couple of tricks / styles, and sticking longer with those that work... One record may work one time and stink the next... Because of timing in the set, atmosphere in the club or even a shitty soundsystem!
