for U.S. mail,
Mail
The Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Mail Preference Service lets you opt out of receiving direct mail marketing from many national companies for five years. When you register with this service, your name will be put on a “delete” file and made available to direct-mail marketers. However, your registration will not stop mailings from organizations that are not registered with the DMA’s Mail Preference Service. To register with DMA, send your letter to:

Direct Marketing Association
Mail Preference Service
PO Box 643
Carmel, NY 10512

Or register online at www.the-dma.org/consumers/offmailinglist.html.

I think there's stuff you can do to opt-out in the UK as well.

I was just thinking about this today as I bagged up a bin liner full of crap addressed to people that don't live here anymore.

The menus you can do nothing about, short of attacking the person dropping the flyers through the door. Or asking them if they'd mind not doing it. Or maybe stick a collection of the one's you have down the side of the door so that they know not to repeat them.

Something you can do with all those letters you get with freepost envelopes is when you find yourself a little bored, make up some details and fill in the form and then send it back in the envelope for a different company. That way you can helpfully reward them for sending you things you didn't want, and waste the company's time opening it. If everyone did this, it wouldn't be economically viable to do junk mail.
Hmm....

I remember reading an article saying that if everybody just sent the junk mail back to where it came from the company's would be inundated and would soon get the massage and stop sending out junk mail.

What i don't understand though is why they send this shit out in the first place. Do they honestly think it works or that even people read it and don't automaticly put it in the bin/recycle. I mean, it's a complete waste of time. There must be a person in each of the these company's marketing teams that has convinced someone in authority that it works and is a really important part of there strategic marketing campain.

Oh there is something you can do about the menu's. What you do is pile there mail box high with stinking turds. And write them a polite note explaining to them that if they don't stop sending poor imagrants who get paid 10p a fortnight around the community's with wads of useless marketing parifinailia. They will find more then just stincking shit through they're letter box.

it does make the process of ordering takeaway a much longer one than it really should be. i usually base my decision around the name of the restaurant and little else. last night i had a tough time deciding between an indian from the gaylord or chinese from happy chops.

also, i annoyingly can't find the photos but mark pawson, a low brow artist, wallpapered his hallway with pizza menus; it was this brilliantly horrible mass of reds and yellows and greasy, messy elipses of pizza imagery.

The problem is it does work. A lot of the leaflets (called "households") are delivered by postmen and this is one of the few growing areas of new business for Royal Mail. It only takes a response rate of something like 1 in 10,000 to make it worthwhile for the company who sends them out.

I was thinking about the pick up rate and at what point it would be viable. And do you know what? The figure i came up with was 1 in 10 000 :D

that's as good a criterion as any. i wanna see mark pawson's pics, that sounds fascinating - lemme know if you find em cuzzie.

i like shonky's idea about confusing them by sending the wrong forms back too.

the halal joint just up the road from me sends a new menu every week. it opens out into 4 pages. they only sell curries, and burgers. god knows how many calls they must get for stuff they dont do. what gets me is the surprised tone the operator always has '' lamb saag, no we no do lamb saag" "southern fried chicken special meal? we no do that, what that"
"pizza? ohhhh nooo we dont do pizza" WELL WHY THE FUCK DO YOU KEEP SENDING STUFF TO MY DOOR THAT SAYS YOU DO?

it's a very s p e c i a l i s t topping. you have to ask for it - it's not on any menus. pricey though.

im not sure who made the panda / pizza connection but i like it.
