I never thought banksy's works were cutting edge or mind-blowing or whatever. However I think the guy has humour and a message. It might not be the most profound message, so what? At least it makes you think, even if it's just for a moment. I enjoy what he is doing.
At least he has something to say. Where does he state that he is a fighter against capitalism etc.? It'
As always some idiots have declared him something that he probably doesn't want to be, while he is just happy that what he does is appreciated by people, and he can earn some money with what he likes doing..

But hey big surprise bitter stnuc who have never had a creative idea in their live love to criticise him.. go post a blog about it.. that'll teach him *snicker* *snicker*

Here's a mystery for you. Renegade urban graffiti artist Banksy is clearly a guffhead of massive proportions, yet he's often feted as a genius straddling the bleeding edge of now. Why? Because his work looks dazzlingly clever to idiots. And apparently that'll do.

Banksy first became famous for his stencilled subversions of pop-culture images; one showed John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson in a famous pose from Pulp Fiction, with their guns replaced by bananas. What did it mean? Something to do with the glamourisation of violence, yeah? Never mind. It looked cool. Most importantly, it was accompanied by the name "BANKSY" in huge letters, so everyone knew who'd done it. This, of course, is the real message behind all of Banksy's work, despite any appearances to the contrary.

Take his political stuff. One featured that Vietnamese girl who had her clothes napalmed off. Ho-hum, a familiar image, you think. I'll just be on my way to my 9 to 5 desk job, mindless drone that I am. Then, with an astonished lurch, you notice sly, subversive genius Banksy has stencilled Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald either side of her.

Wham! The message hits you like a lead bus: America ... um ... war ... er ... Disney ... and stuff. Wow. In an instant, your worldview changes forever. Your eyes are opened. Staggering away, mind blown, you flick v-signs at a Burger King on the way home. Nice one Banksy! You've shown us the truth, yeah?

As if that wasn't irritating enough, Banksy's vague, pseudo-subversive preaching is often accompanied by a downright embarrassing hardnut swagger. His website is full of advice to other would-be graffiti bores, like: "be aware that going on a mission drunk out of your head will result in some truly spectacular artwork and at least one night in the cells". Woah, man - the cells!

He goes on to explain that "real villains" think graffiti is pointless - not because he wants you to agree with them, but because he wants you to know he's mates with a few tough-guy criminal types. Coz Banksy's an anarchalist what don't respect no law, innit?

One of his most imbecilic daubings depicts a monkey wearing a sandwich board with "lying to the police is never wrong" written on it. So presumably Ian Huntley was right then, Banksy? You absolute thundering backside.

Recently, our hero's made headlines by sneaking a dummy dressed in Guantánamo rags into Disneyland (once again fearlessly exposing Mickey Mouse's disgusting war criminal past), and defacing several hundred copies of Paris Hilton's new album (I haven't heard her CD, but I'm willing to bet it's far superior to Blur's godawful Think Tank, a useless bumdrizzle of an album, whose artwork was done by Banksy - presumably he spray-painted it on a brick and hurled it through EMI's window, yeah?).

Right now you can see some of Banksy's life-altering acts of genius for yourself at his LA exhibition Barely Legal (yeah? Yeah!), including a live elephant painted to blend in with some gaudy wallpaper. This apparently represents "the big issues some people choose to ignore" - ie pretty much anything from global poverty to Aids. But not, presumably, the fat-arsed, berk-pleasing rubbishness of Banksy. We're all keeping schtum about that one
Its quite easy for someone as quick witted and humorous as charlie brooker to make anyone at all sound like a twat. His viewpoint in this article could well have been based on what the guardians editor told him to say. Dont get me wrong - i felt myself thinking "you know what, your right, banksy is a wanker" until i realised this.

Banksy is a legend, he's done some pretty cool stuff and he does it with good humour too.

Charlie brooker just loves a good old moan so he can suck banksys big fat underground cock.

lol clearly there's a thin line between not liking banksy and "being bitter stnuc who have never had a creative idea in their lives"

chill out mate, people were just discussing an artist - its not the end of the world. I find it ironic how agressively you tell people to not take it seriously..

It's art.. the whole point is that its subjective and emotive - i dont think i should have to say 'well its good for what it is' and appreciate everything that comes along. Like i said, banksy has some sick pieces i just think he's a bit of a hypocrite. I figured this would be good place to debate art - but apparently not, i'll save it for another time

Also, be fair deamonds - in the same way if someone came up to you and were going on about chase and status, or snoop dogg millionaire of enter shikari being the new saviours of dubstep,

and you in return said 'well i just dont like it (for whatever numerous reasons)' and they replied with that sort of reponse of

'omg stop being so critical at least theyre spreading the dubstep sound just cuz you've never had a creative thought you tnuc - you're just jealous'

you'd probably think they were being a bit of a bellend

i rate his stuff, and think he's got a sometimes funny and intelligent way of making a point about political issues etc. - but i'm a little sceptical of his "edgy underground graffiti warrior" image after he started selling some of his stuff from his exhibitions

Charlie brooker's DEFINITELY never been creative, I'm definitely not creative, otherwise I'd be going somewhere other than art school, and I can't speak for the rest of the criticism crew.

I don't like CB for the record, think I have said it before here. I find him a typical smug ABCer guardian journalist who's only gift is reguratating the obvious into something that is funny or very droll (and cynical always appeals to the British palette). I don't like Banksy because as an artist I don't rate him, he's done some good stuff but he's not the renegade anarchist fuck the system he paints (haha see what I did there?) as. I went to art school 7 years ago and the number of stnuc trying to copy banksy or blatantly copy him was laughable.

He's making money off the mugs who buy into counter-culture - yeah appreciate his work but don't for an instant think its some kind of subversive political 'FUCK THE MAN' statement. He's got a niche market and made a mint from it - like ethical threads t-shirts, body shop, et al - to coin another poster, they capatlise on the anti-captilist.

Oh and the dude who does afflicted yard totally pwned him.
