AN OPEN LETTER REGARDING FILE SHARING -
LAYERING BUDDHA UPLOADED BY JOURNALISTS
http://www.monolake.de/open_letter.html
At least two journalists uploaded the complete Layering Buddha CD already to p2p servers such as soulseek, three weeks prior release date.

I think it is always a good idea to tag songs.
To not put the tags on in the first place is a bit naive in the current digital environment but at least they have done something about it.
I just can't see what the journalist had to gain by uploading it. Surely out of gratitude he/she should have kept it to theirselves.
Unprofessional IMO!

i'm not going go further in this thread ,but it's a bit unfair to aim this at journalists exclusively. who's privy to pre-releases?
-employees at record stores who encode music clips & do reviews for the websites.
-journalists & bloggers
-employees at magazines
-employees at the distro houses
-employees at fm radio stations
you can't just single one group out and blame them. that's silly, imo.
i think it's also a bad move telling everyone that you're planning to tag your promo's. ninja's move in silence. you lost the upper hand by telling everyone. wouldn't it be better to catch the person red handed in private? just a thought.

Seckle I get your point because the article does point the fingure at journalists.
But the label has to take some blame.....
"We send out promo copies to everyone who asks for it."
I just have a real issue with illegal downloading especially if the song hasn't even been released.
But whoever uploaded it is still unprofessional!

I hate reviewing off CD-Rs. Depending on the quality of the disc, I encounter all types of problems. I got two last night and my stereo (albeit kinda old) had some trouble reading then. I have plenty of releases that come across my desk for Brainwashed and I'll be honest that I'm less likely to review a product that the label or promotions company builds barriers between.
I don't have the solution to the filesharing conundrum. I've had a CD out (not dubstep) since 2005 and it was on all sorts of sites, from P2P to illegal Russian mp3-tailers within a day of release if not sooner. It sucks, but what makes me think that the same people who download my album would pay for it.

Innit. Pre-release uploads aren't cool.. but if you're sending out close to a hundred promo copies of your CD, it's hardly surprising to be honest.monolake wrote:We are not arguing here from a sales perspective. The upload may even be good for promotion. We argue from a moral point of view. This is about RESPECT. And the lack of it.
If you are privileged enough to receive a track for any purpose before its full release, it's your moral responsibility to ensure that no-one else gets the track.
I say no-one else........its different if you give it to a friend than sharing it on a worldwide p2p network. If you get something exclus, why would you want to share it with a lot of people?
I hope they track down who uploaded it.
