Should I buy a Microkorg
I'm talking to some guy on craigslist who's selling one for $300 (Canadian). Not my ideal synth, but I live in a hick town where electronic music equipment is hard to come by, so...
The market price seems to be about $400+. :\

Not that it sounds that bad offcourse, but basicly there's nothing analog about the whole thing... It's analog moddeling. And there are better analog moddeling VSTI's than this thing!
I would take this seriously if we were talking proper analog gear. Moog, Roland, etc. But saying a €300 analog moddeling synth can beat 99% of softsynths is just plain bullshit!

Some guy is selling a DX7 for $500 as well... Maybe I should buy that one instead?
Help guys, I need internet people to tell me what to buy!

I guess I could order one, but shipping can be quite expensive. Like $50 or $100+ expensive if you buy it on ebay, most online retailers are more reasonable though.futures_untold wrote:I found the keys are stupidly small making the synth difficult to play.
Also, surely you can get any synth delivered to your door via the tinterweb???
Personally, I wouldn't be spending 300 of any currency on a synth that wasn't making me wet..!

do you understand how circuitry and algorithms work?Sifres wrote:jobbanaught wrote:just get the PC editor and be fine. Sounds better than 99% of the VSTis out there...
Get outta here! Softsynths are capable of waaaaay more... Did you ever invest in a proper soundcard then, and proper monitors?

Do explain though, if I'm wrong and you have the time...
Still think it's a bullshit claim though... Could have said this in 2001 and be right if you compared it to reason. Nowadays you can get softsynths cheaper and better sounding...

don't really feel like breaking it down 100% but yes it is all emulated and in house, and yes there are soft synths with some different options, but you'd be hard pressed to find one that compares to most analog modeled synths when it comes to a side by side comparison of what's being emulated not even getting into proprietary algorithms/circuitry that is modeled and such which have distinct sounds to them
that and with a hard synth you're taking some strain off your cpu (and they look cool) heh

I'll have to take your word on this one.. Thanks for explaining.Deadly Habit wrote:don't really feel like breaking it down 100% but yes it is all emulated and in house, and yes there are soft synths with some different options, but you'd be hard pressed to find one that compares to most analog modeled synths when it comes to a side by side comparison of what's being emulated not even getting into proprietary algorithms/circuitry that is modeled and such which have distinct sounds to them
So it's all down to the size of your peeweethat and with a hard synth you're taking some strain off your cpu (and they look cool) heh
Hear you on the CPU thing, but I'm astounded at the amount of softsynths and FX plugs I can open with my brand new €500 windows pc. Including one's that have extensive processing to model analog gear like Arturia. The Arturia that used to stop my P4 in it's tracks on a pad patch
I haven't been able to get above 35% of my cpu...

trusay about the menu scrolling, but if u just wanna create patches to brock out on, then go for it!!! ms2000b is wayyyy more fun but microkorg aint bad at all. if its easy to buy it, then go for it, you wont be dissapointed i dont think

With 99% of all Softsynths I do not only mean your high-powered NI, Linn-Plug and Spectrasonic synths (which are pretty expensive themselves), but also all that Synthedit stuff and the countless amounts of mediocre VAs that float around the web.Sifres wrote:jobbanaught wrote:just get the PC editor and be fine. And while your at it, I'm already out there, have tested lots of synths, countless VSTis and I stand with my statement. Oh wait, maybe its only 98%...
You know, I dont have a good scientific explanation myself, but there is something in hardware VAs that most software VAs just dont seem to capture. One easy thing I always test this is to take a bunch of preset patches and play them through ALL octaves. On the Micorkorg for example every patch has a destinct character and is playable and interesting through all octaves. if you try this with your average VSTi on the other hand, I promise it sounds shite either in the very low or very high registers, because it lacks a certain kind of character / the proprietary algorithms / the voodoo / how you wanna call it
