fair play.. nathan barley is hilarious no doubt about that.. I might have exaggerated a little bit..Uncle Bill wrote:Yep. And Charlie Brooker has had plenty of creative ideas. He's not just a rent-a-gob. Nathan Barley and TVGoHome were funnier and more insightful than anything Banksy has done.J-sh wrote:lol clearly there's a thin line between not liking banksy and "being bitter stnuc who have never had a creative idea in their lives"
I think Bansky is technically skilled and has his own original style but he's just stating the bleedin' obvious most of the time. I'll go to the exhibition though because it's two miles from my house I'm sure some of it will be worth looking at.
I don't like people on this thread getting called "hater" for not rating Banksy though. Is there a party line against having a sceptical attitude?
Hater is a word used by those who want everyone to agree on everything because they're too thick to handle a variety of opinions.
still something about that column strikes me as incredibly bitter and hateful.. then again that's what is column is a bout and that's what he is best at.
then again it's almost as if brooker can't distinguish between the people that raise banksy on a pedestal and the artist himself..
and I don't think everyone who doesn't rate banksy is a hater or a bitter tnuc for that matter.. I like what he's doing and I have no problems with anyone else disagreeing.. everyone is entitled to their opinion.. it's just the way that people criticise that gets me..
shouting elitism and pretentiousness when in fact they themselves are elitist and pretentious..
and this is spot on, thank you

did you people hate Andy Warhol too? i mean he capitalized on the capitalism he mocked, right? as have MANY other artists of classic & contemporary context. Today its become so fucking popular to over-analyze art until you have broken it down to something far more simple & wasteful than ever intended. It happens to every new kind of music & art that comes along.
i read something from Banksy back in the 90s that said he was just part of this & that if everyone would do their own thing then his wouldnt stand out so much. That pretty much sums it up for me. Instead of bitching about what this guy paints on a wall...GO PAINT SOMETHING BETTER ON A FUCKING WALL.
to quote Sole from Anticon(i think)..."You want to join the revolution? Then wipe that Clear Channel off the billboards"

Tbh I don't rate Andy Warhol very much at all and neither do a lot of other artists I know. I give him props for discovering Basquiat and that's about it. He took a commercial process used for mass reproduction and... reproduced images for commercial gain?! What a visionary.Adikt wrote:like really...wtf?

All Pop Art provoked was people getting disgusted with art, and a load of plastic new age hipsters without a social conscience.
i do see what you mean about Warhol, but i think he was more about being art than actually painting or whatever medium. His films were often just shot while he & his friends sat around as they normally would. He made art out of what he saw, be it a soup can or Basquiat, who is my personal favorite artist...along with Dali
also, its not fair to blame the artist for the legions of fucking idiots that choose to follow them. Kobain certainly has nothing to do with his face being on the side of a pair of Converse All Stars...point being that Banksy has his own style...he had that style before people were doing books & exhibitions on him...sometimes it is clever & sometimes it is just something other than a block wall to look at. what are you doing to change your world into what you dream??
