New to Dubstep

Post by lazyrussian » Thu Jun 18, 2009 10:48 am

Hello,

I've been an EDM lover for the last 12 years of my life. I've been a fan of trance (progressive mostly) since '97, and a fan of house music (funky, dark, progressive) since '05. Recently, I discovered Dubstep. I don't know much about it (except it mixes DnB, House, Funk, Hip-hop) or where to even start looking for tracks. I've been browsing youtube for random mixes with tracklists. So far I've found one artist I like, Martyn.

Could anyone suggest a few artists or free mixes that I should listen too to get a better grounding with the genre.

Thanks!

That mix is good, it's got a good mix of mellow stuff and slightly heavier tunes.

The best overview of the dubstep scene I've heard in a single mix is Kode 9's Sonar Mix.

It's a couple of years old though.

For a more current look at dubstep I'd recommend the Tectonic Plates 2 compilation which has a cracking mix by DJ Pinch on the second CD.

You'll have to buy that though.

Also...all of the Dubstep Allstars mix CDs are more or less essential.

I just finished listening to the Tranquera mix that was given to me by the first replier, Abs. - it's pretty good. So far I'm really enjoying the Kode9 mix that all of you guys recommended. It's freaking awesome!

Are there any dubstep podcasts you guy recommend and any other radio stations besides dubstep.fm?

Thanks!

Thanks for your help everyone. I've found 10 podcasts with over 200+ mixes (randing from 30mins-3 hours a piece). This should hold me over for a long time, and help figure out what I do and don't enjoy.

I'll also check out sub.fm and rinse.fm.

You have to check out this Sub.FM mix man. It was my introduction to the genre and to date some of the best I've heard.

Sub FM 4-14-07-14-5-7-51

Hit me up via PM if you can't find it and we'll work something out.

This is the best thing I've ever heard in my life!!! Cannot not stop listening to it. Where can I get more mixes like this? These Lounge+DeepDarkBass+DnBish style tracks are exactly what I'm looking for!!!

Are these tracks all on Surface Tension? Anywhere else I can mixes like this?
