How many tracks?

Post by dignan » Thu Jun 18, 2009 11:24 pm

Was just wondering how many tracks does everyone use on an average session? I probably use around 18-22 tracks on my tunes...

depends on how many resamples or if i'm using loops or a drum line i made previously but i keep it minimal mainly so 24 or lower generally

i try to bounce to audio if my effects usage or automation gets nuts to save cpu so i can add more though

It depends. But i like to put all sounds and bits on seperate tracks. So i usually end up with 20+ tracks. My latest one is 32 tracks 8)

5-20

though alot of them are just for extra space so i dont get clausterphobic

alot less now with seperate sets in the same project in ableton live

so i can make sounds in one file and drag them from the browser while im in another set all in the same project

saves alot of space and headache

usually less than 15, but I also work in iterations....I'll have bounces that come from say 10 drum tracks bounced down to 2 tracks that then get chopped up. for me, I like to keep the track count down so that things are more manageable and focused. If things are getting too complicated I usually bounce and reduce it down...something about having a complex musical expression as a more tangible "object" is liberating

The less tracks the better, of course. BUT... If a tune has vocals and a bunch of fx and 1-off fx, its not uncommon for us to wind up with 40-50 channels.

W/ that said, come mix time the majority of.plugin usage is at the bus level; I tend to wind up with about 4 sends and 10 to 12 busses for drums/basses/perc/a few for vox/etc.

Tbh this is where logic really shines w/ a second monitor.

As far as dub mixin straight iyah dubbed anything from 4 track to 20+ with 4-8 fx returns.
In solo production trying to keep it simple, 10-18 tracks.
