sampling movies

i've tried for the past couple of weeks to figure out how to sample audio clips from a movie... i just CAN'T figure it out.

i give up.

i'd really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction as to what program i should use, and a basic explanation of how to do it too perhaps?... i have recycle and reason4, which is all i use for production.

appreciate the help.

Audacity is really good for this sort of thing. It's free as well
Just run your tv into your computer using an aux cable or whatever else, into whatever input u have (soundcard or interface or whatever)

Alternatively you can play them on your computer and record from there, but you need to set up audacity to record directly from your soundcard

yah i use audacity, im not some sound quality freak so i just use my lappies internal mic. sounds fine, if it sounds shitty thats almost better, depending on what im using the sample for.

if you have an internal mic, you can just click record on audacity, make sure the movie clip is gonna be loud enough and play the movie, this will record the audio of the movie. pretty straight forward.

thanks for all the help i'm currently trying audacity. i've used it before to mix two songs together like a year ago, but never used it again.

also...
i've sampled just regular music files in a couple of my tunes, and in one of my tunes in particular the sample sounds sooooooooo off...
BUT, if i increase the speed of the sample so that it matches beat, the pitch of the voice in the sample is all f*cked...

is there any way around that? sorry i'm still sorta new ><

Depending on what make of soundcard you have, you can choose to record the Audio Out via Audacity or any other audio program capable of recording in audio

I know for sure that Soundblaster soundcards have this ability simply because I can double-click the Creative Soundblaster control panel and select the record in source to "What-U-Hear". Then I can go into Audacity, play whatever I want to record and hit the Record button

If you don't have any other soundcards hooked up to your laptop then Audacity will automatically hook up to your built in soundcard inside your laptop. When you play a film in Windows Media for example, just press record in Audacity and it will record anything that is playing out of Windows Media player. Yeah, it's that easy!

If it's a DIVX / XVID, load it up into VirtualDubMod and then:

Streams -> Stream List
Select the audio stream
click "Demux"

this can result in a MP3 or an AC3 file, if it's a 5-channel AC3 you'll probably need to convert it.

If it's a DVD you can rip and convert the audio from it using something called Robot4Rip.

Check out doom9.org if you need more info on this stuff, there are detailed guides there.

Sony Vegas....

easy as pie.

load in the file, it shows you thumbnails of the video on one track and gives you the audio on another track...

just cut out what you wanna use, just like in any DAW with a long audio file, and render it as a .wav or whatever.

i use vdub to create a wav file of the film's .avi/etc when i can't record stereo mix. very simple and free program (right?).

Or, download (the trial of course) of Acid pro, throw in the movie and hey presto, picture and sound on seperate tracks.

Fruity loops has fruity granulizer that sort of does this by cutting your sound into loads of small portions and then altering the length of each piece, there is also a change pitcha and change tempo effect in audacity.

audacity is your stand alone light guy for that .. you`ll record any sounds that you would hear comin'out of your laptop in a single click ..youtubes online streamage , foreign radio/tv..

i also used audacity to make an audio sample from the movie Eraserhead, success! thanks for all the help again everyone! =D

Use VLC media player.

In the open menu you can also check a box called "stream this" or something.
Then go to the options of that part. Check the box, stream to file, in codecs select f32 for 32bit audio and pick a filename in the right box. Press ok. Press ok again, press play, wait a few minutes for it to complete and you have the entire audio of the movie in a wav file.

You can also make it play simultanously, so you can scroll to the bits you actually want.

Maybe I should youtube this, because I don't think my explanation is all that clear.
