Allright so against the grain I want a pc, had macs all my life, sick to death of em.

Looken at spending about $1800 aussie dollars (870.300 GBP)

I've heard toshiba and asus are a good go and to steer clear of hp and dell.

I've also heard that the sony vaio's are pretty bullet proof but I dont know if i'd be just paying the extra for the prestige.

Anyone got any suggetions PLEASE! got to do it before finacial year

yeah man, always against the grain here....

I would always recommend PC over Mac. I used both professionally and although they are fundamentally the same, ie do the same jobs, I find the Mac much more fussy.
you can get some mad power PC laptops now, 4 gig Ram etc I aint so keen on Vista and use XP pro but windows 7 looks better.....anyway
its your cash!

I use an Acer laptop for the last 4/5 years never any probs (touch wood) still use it to produce on the road and for all my serato needs.

like earlier poster said you just cant click on the 'free porn' pop ups!!

Been looking at that one but i heard you wanna get at least 15" when you;'re doing music production with sequencers and all that otherwaie the screen aint big enough and gets annoyin apparently.

my setup:

Dell Inspiron 1420 (came with linux, $600)

using the onboard SigmaTel with ASIO at 2048 samples at 44.1khz in FL Studio with M-Audio AV20 speakers (don't buy these, get BX-5a or better, these are cheap) and Oxygen8 v2

runs really well, excellent quality, etc

all of that for under a grand and you get 2 buttons on the mouse (!!!)

(will run Mac OS X if you can find the right AHCI driver !! i have successfully booted the installer DVD on this machine)

If you get a macbook, get it insured. I was out playing in Ibiza last month and i had my macbook pro stolen from my apartment. Only getting 300 quid off the insurance aswell so dont make my mistake

doesnt make sense to me why mac has one button to start.

I actually find apple + ctrl clicking faster than windows once you adjust to it

Macs are fashion accessories, much like iPods and iphones. There are better featured more functional devices out there, but people eat the advertising and dig that roundy look... -:pukes:-

Save your money, buy double the spec on a PC and thank yourself everytime you see a cool new prog that doesn't run on a Mac. Bootcamp??? Pain in the arse.

My mate got fed up with his macbook and bought a pc laptop instead. He's loving it! My old house mate had problems with the cd drive which involved authorised repair centres and 'nuff stress. PC users just buy a £20 DVD drive from any computer store, pop it in themselves and are good to go within hours.

You may also want to consider the external hardware you will attach to your new laptop. Do you need firewire, ethernet or any other special plugs. If you have a usb keyboard, midi controller, wacom + soundcard, you'll be reaching for usb hubs in no time with a Mac. Apple charge extra for their computers that have extra firewire ports etc and call 'em 'features'...

The only reason to consider a Mac is if your going to use Logic. Truly, that's it...!

(I won't deny my PC bias. I hate Macs more than I hate women with 'tashes....

In my opinion the functions of a notebook are much more powerful than any mac, you have the upper hand for higher processing speeds and graphics utilization, unlike macs, there are many draw backs as the years will progress ex: upgrades, software, graphics, processor, etc.

Also it depends on how much you are spending, but from experience I would choose a notebook over a mac any day.

I bought the new MacBook (13,5") when it first came out, upgraded it to 4Gb memory and have since then been doing music and worked in photoshop daily. I run Logic Pro 8 on it and my latest tune hade over 80 plug-ins and effects spread over 15 different channels and it still runs smooth.

The new Mac's are killers and OS-X is stable as asphalt. I haven't regretted buying it and I don’t see my self going back to PC.

i would recommend getting a PC but just know this, if you plan on running windows on a mac via VM (parallels) know this, parallels becomes unstable when your doing big projects.

buy a PC, buy all your software and stay the fuck away from torrents. Granted this is the hard road and takes thousands of dollars to become legal, but when its all said an done, LOVELY!!
