looking into saving and investing in some decks. any ideas?

Post by kylfir » Wed Jul 08, 2009 9:42 am

What would be the best set to go for?

I was looking at the m-audio torq xponent
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.c ... 241136#new

Its got nice sensitivity and control... but... doesnt play vinyl... was also contemplating on a set of decks/serato hookup... the only question is... what decks to buy... technics are choice... but its like napalm in the wallet to get 2 of those... so I was wondering if there were some nice vinyl/digital decks that were mildly affordable...

the other thing is that... as of now, I havent invested in vinyl, simply because I have not the decks for them to go on... but I still like the idea of having the ability to play them, so yea... CONUNDRUM!

If you have any thoughts or suggestions, they would be much appreciated.

Its the most expensive thing i own. I have aprox 500 records, and they all cost me around £5 each... Thats a LOT of money.

The torq xponant feels brilliant! its great for beginners, and has some amazing control options. I highly recommend it. The extra bonus of using digital, is that each release is going to cost you between £1 - £3 per release depending on quality. So have a think about that too.
Serato though

Theres a reason people are still using these decks after 30 years - they are the best!

Records are expensive but once you get into it its like crack without the downside. I love nothing more than shuffling through the collection on a Sunday morning and pulling out X, Y or Z for the first time in ages. Making mix tapes and generally enjoying the vinyl .... records are your friends.

+1 Digin in the crates is cool. Plus I dont care what anyone says MP3's sound like dog shit.
Or you could have this inspiring view instead ...

Have to agree with this as i have no money thanks to my love of collecting vinyl now.

Its so expensive but having the vinyl in front of your face rather than a mp3 file is a lot more personal and enjoyable imo.

Plus if you decide to pack it all in your going to have a massive collection of vinyl to sell or just files that will just be deleted.

obviously buying technics brand new has its upsides, but a pair made 20 years ago will still be solid today, there's a reason they're industry standard. Id say go for second hand techs and serato. it will set you back quite a bit but that way you get the analogue or digital option(you can switch between using serato and actual vinyl mid-set) whilst giving you the control and smoothness of vinyl.

Plus a benefit that has always pushed people to sticking with vinyl is that you can physically "see" the music moving, via the turntable. This adds a new dimension to not only appreciating music but experiencing it in time.

Plus a big massive vinyl collection looks cool as fuck

If you're getting into dj'ing be prepared to spend ALOT of money if you're going to take it seriously, but always remember; buy cheap, buy twice.

I also say used 1200's. But I have a Numark TT500 that I think is a pretty sweet deck, although the pitch slider shit the bed for no apparent reason. If money is tight the TT500 is a good alternative to the 1200's.
My next deck will definetly be a 1200 tho.

what do you guys think about the Torq Xponent versus CDJ's in general? notice CDJ's didnt come up in this discussion? are they still frowned upon?

i am also making this decision currently, and cost of vinly is an issue. especially outside the uk where it's harder to get ($20 a vinyl roughly in australia sometimes). notice CDJ's didnt come up in this discussion? are they still frowned upon?

i'm in the same boat. I've been saving money for some decks for a while now. My main problem is which set-up to get, and when to get it.

My mates suggest I invest in some CDJS as "that's what all the clubs use innit" and the fact that I produce a heck of a lot of music. However, cdjs cost a fuck-load of money - but have that benefit of the low 'cost' of mp3s and being able to spin my 'own shit'.

Due to not having a vinyl collection but a massive collection of mp3s,wavs,etc im going to have to get some cdjs or similar, but i might also invest in a technics deck too, so that i can spin any vinyl that my mates bring over or i decide to buy for the love of carressing that plastic.

Or maybe, get 2 technics and a cdj at the side? <--- seems the ideal.

Thoughts?

i think i myself did a wrong choice on these

cuz i loved the idea of vinyl and all that but now i owe 250+ records and my next life goal is lots of travelling by my own without an opportunity of proper place to live

so it seems as serato is the right thing of today - to play your own bits and dubs but still getting that vinyl feeling - you know what i mean

still want to cut some vinyl dubs with my own tracks dont kno what to do really

This and only this.

Do not get fooled by this false economy that is digital mixing. Stick to the real stuff and leave this pretend trickery to people who cannot mix.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
