the point is about exploitation. if scion booked people to fly over from london, and then totally misrepresented the culture, thats one thing. they don't have a track record of doing that. sure, they don't run a perfect operation, but at least they're promoting good music, instead of promoting shit music. at least it gives these producers the ability to play to a brand new crowd that most probably have never heard dubstep or never heard a whole night of it.

we're way beyond a point in this scene where you can be defensive about expansion. that door got blown down with snoop dogg.

*fixed.

but seriously, its fascinating to see the pro scion camp let loose their inner fascist.

dont like scion? well then just STFU. HATER! angry broke HATER!

nah, shit is bigger than dubstep. toyota understands.

this "dubstep studio" shit is a mockery of innovative producers & hardworking promoters everywhere.

but its cool, cash rules i suppose... united by individuality lol. fucking farce.

*edit* and seriously. they can make a flash sequencer for the site, but out of four featured producers they cant correctly put Plastician instead of MSTRKRFT? wat?

totally exposes them as the bullshit they are imho.

yep. plenty. and ive been, and had fun. and people i know get paid, and thats good for them, i aint mad at em. (they also sponser tons of parties with covers as well..)

doesnt buy my silence tho.

i hope everyone realizes that nationwide, scion is more or less the biggest party thrower of dubstep & other bass driven sounds. not the best lol, just the biggest.

which is why they can boldly declare in this contest that they are going to throw a NYE party wherever the fuck they want.

come on man. i'd never call you a hater. i just think there's a whole lot worse that scion could do than try to put people on and throw some parties for free. imo, its about fighting battles worth fighting. besides, no amount of anti-corporate net bashing is going to stop them throwing parties, because in a recession, who is going to turn down seeing Kode 9 / martyn for free in their home town?

its like rage against the machine being signed to sony music, spreading revolution and free thought to the planet, and then a handful of people calling zack de la rocha a hypocrite for being a corporate mouthpiece. which battle is worth fighting in that situation? was it more important that RATM got their music out to the world, or was it more important to try and discredit them in the process?

lol, i know YOU arent saying im a hater, you did call me mad tho, and im not mad... i just have a opinion...

tbh, if this is the new model, i wish we had the record companies back.

seems like we successfully destroyed one beast and have traded it for a slicker one...

at least the old media companies had a stake in it lol, this is just part of toyotas advertising budget...

and its not at all just dubstep. scion successfully helped scribble jam die, taht was sad last year....

is it any suprise that toyota has taken the reigns of promoting dubstep in the states and a few months later we hear about "post-dubstep" from some of the original heads? i dunno man...

They're not really interested in promoting dubstep. They're interested in promoting their cars which is going to happen dubstep or not. You will end up getting marketed to by them regardless. Would you rather it be through a rad free party featuring artists you'd love to see.... or would you rather they make some more TV commercials or billboards?

um, tv commercials & billboards please.

i have no problem paying covers. and there are artists i love to see doing something everyday already.

innnn fact, ive already paid cover to see all the artists they are pushing.

cept for joker. who id glady pay cover to see come to NYC. and so would plennnnty other people, and scion doesnt have to have anything to do with it.

basically what im getting at is... we dont need them. and we should question when they become the force they are, and realize how powerful this thing is.... worth more than gold, for real.

I can't afford to pay to see these acts, because I, too, am not getting that scion money.

I am an angry broke hater, there I said it. A scion hugging, global capitalism advocate who worships commodification but cannot stand the Free Credit Report . com jingles so I turn to scion because I can suckle from their teat the culture and musical trends that I need breastfed to me by corporate america.

I just try not to let the ethics part bother me.

re: scion dubstep parties or artists being sponsored - thats not what this is about... #the thread title

its about a dubstep loop studio.. this is the epitome of corny.

and I guess the music is just cookie cutter after all right?

agree with human? - completely takes the piss out of everything producers are trying to do

dubplate hero anyone?

kate you dont seem to be making that much sense.. people work at jobs and can make a living without needing to be involved in the corporate sphere

its not about being bitter, its about knowing when a fish stinks

we did a couple shows with scion, sure it was cool getting the extra cash but in the long run they didn't really do anything for us other than stick a big annoying banner behind the booth and make us put a logo on the flyer.

they wanted us to pass out CDs and hats and shit and take pictures of all the people with the swag and i wasn't feelin that at all. we dropped them after two shows and haven't looked back.

our crowd wasn't any bigger, they didn't even give us enough cash to throw the shows free or cheaper. we may have gotten a listing on their website but I'm not even sure about that. overall it wasn't worth it.

not really a bad experience with the company but not anything that made me want to keep dealing with them either.

on the other hand i have seen a shitload of dope hiphop shows thanks to scion and a bunch of hobos have gotten my free scion shirts i get every time so i guess thats good.

wonder if those four gave their permission to be used? along with all the links on the right....

wouldn't have thought coki with his distaste for the limelight would be up for being on the front page of "dubstep paint by numbers"

the whole "distaste for the limelight" image to me just seems like a very clever and sure way to get people even more interested. And seems to work every time. Personally, I feel it is neglecting an artists responsibility to their public.
That's just my opinion.

Those artists getting paid to play for them are going to take that money and buy more gear and drugs and are going to eventually turn that money into more tunes for everyone to enjoy.

If you love something, set it free, dont cage it in and try too keep it to yourselves.

If churches had this attitude about God, well, that might have been a good thing, nevermind
TRUE!!
I think people that complain about dubstep artist getting paid to produce great music must still live at home with their parents and don't have bills to pay..
Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Love me some free scion parties!! :o
YES YES YES...could not agree with this more....
