Kick drums...

Post by zefa » Fri Jan 06, 2006 7:08 pm

Right i know this is prolly a silly question to post as everyone is fairly secretive about how they produce etc...

But im having serious problems getting my kick drums to sound right at the mo...i find it ok when writing other forms of music, but when i comes to dubstep, im finding it hard to get enough top end on the kicks...an eg of what i mean is in Pinch's Guilty Pleasure's RMX or on Caspa's Ive lost my marbles...there are loads of other eg's out there but as im listening to the Joe Nice mix at the mo these are the ones that spring to mind...

Ive tried layering etc, but suspect im going seriously wrong somewhere...any tips?

Antares filter - notch filter up a bit of top using the parallel routing setting (important to use parallel setting rather than routing through each filter in order , otherwise you're filtering the sound out rather than using the filter as a funky additive EQ). Decipher that and you got yourself a nice bit of top end that's harmonically related without taking anything away from the original kick sound.

In addition to your favourite tube emulation plugin to taste of course.

if you want a big clean kick, i wouldnt layer it.
load up one nice kick and depending on its natural character, eq the low end a bit and compress it so it throbs nicely without competing with the sub frequencies.
i find that a bit of tube distortion goes along way if thats the sound your looking for

Cheers...some useful stuff there...will deffo have a bit of that table!!!

Sampling is all and good, but id like to be able to create my own kicks in accordance to the track im making and so would like to be able to create my own...as i do too much sampling as it is!!

Ive got some nice kicks from layering a filtered kick with the top end of another kick...but it's still not quite what im looking for...ill have a go with the compression...

Thanks!!

... but wot kicks are you layering if they're not samples ? if they're keyboard/VSTi sounds they're still samples, just some other blokes not yours ... I just love the grit innit

... dunno if you guys would be into it but a U.S mag called "Scratch" is the S.H.I.T when it comes to these kinda tings, its a Hip-Hop production mag, like a Source for beat makers (with all the +'s & -'s that come with that) but its always got interviews with top boy Rap producers ... and wild pics of their ash'd out labs :D

Ive got a 909 - used to make techno so id just crank it up and voila you have an awsome kick...but for dubstep the kicks seem different to me, having just used a 909 as the basis of my tracks..the kicks seem to be more subtle...if that makes any sense!!

Just have to keep experimenting!!!
