I've been listening to OWEN rather obsessively. Perhaps the most simple, to the point music i've heard in a while. I was a big fan of American Football, they really had it. OWEN is like American Football stripped to the basics.. all the good bits. That has been my post - Cap'n Jazz attention as of late. OWEN, me, seems to make sense for some reason.

Cap'n Jazz - literally a group of kids @ the time. NOISY kids. They would never have known how influential or referenced they could have been years later huh? Crazy.

I love Cap'n Jazz, Owls, American Football and Owen, the other bands didn't really 'click' with me in the same way. I missed Mike Kinsella last time he was over here, was gutted

^ like i said.. obsessively enjoying the OWEN experience as of late. Everything they have out, on shuffle, repeat. Love it. Its incredibly honest music. Goes down great. I love the lyric " .. you in love with the Cocteau Twins, you're bored with your boyfriend", from Poor Souls. Shit like that. Eloquent really ha.

Bad Abuse, from I Do Percieve.. amazing piece of music. Very Red House Painters, the atmosphere, melody. Addicting. Just walking around Vancouver, listening to OWEN... great.

I got into the Make Believe stuff quite a bit too. I was trying to decide whether or not i like Tim Kinsella's "singing" or not, after all these years - i mean, so he can't sing, he's a horrible "singer" from the conventional point of view, but that's the point right? Cap'n Jazz was great - full on hardcore punk, yet deciding its own rules - and yes, it very much was hardcore at times. I prefer Tim as a punk rock singer, yelling, screaming, doing his thing, with a harder band behind him, otherwise, it all gets a bit lost. But once again, that's the charm i guess right? But do you have the tolerance for it? That's the question. I just won't be listening much. Tim needs the ROCK behind him, imo.

Make Believe is great post-hardcore. The instrumentation is really cool, reminds me of Storm and Stress sometimes. With Tim doing his thing. The Sky Corvair thing was ok too. Once again, great hc punk for the time. I was a fan of Gauge too.

I'm a huge Mike Kinsella fan, American Football being my most favorite of that list. I had not heard of a couple of the other bands and am going to definitely check them out.

disc 1 of analphabetapolothology is probably the most played cd i own. still listen to it regularly..the other bands, with the exception of AF and owls never really 'clicked' for me, might give owen a try though.

Cap'n Jazz are one of my all time favourite bands ever, I could talk about them and Joan of Arc related projects for days.

what other emo (not "emo") bands are you lot into? I must be one of the biggest nerds for that type of stuff around!

small brown bike, hot water music, indian summer, fugazi, texas is the reason were my faves. and bear vs shark, although they're a bit newer. most of these still get a spin once a week or so.

Some goods bands mentioned above, still listen to Sunny Day Real Estate a lot, some early Get Up Kids stuff, Jawbreaker, Rites of Spring, some Appleseed Cast, it's all good.

Was more into the HC side of things to be honest, Neil Perry, Saetia (probs one of my fave bands of all time), City of Caterpillar, As the Sun Sets, pg. 99 etc etc

I'm a big fan of Cap'n Jazz (and related). I guess you guys are into Jawbreaker too then?

Screamo is more my kinda thing though. I'm reet into Jeromes Dream, Orchid, La Quiete, Raein, CoC, Daitro, Portrait, Funeral Diner, Ampere & loads of other great stuff.

Neil On Impression is a Post-Rock band. There's nothing emo nor skramzzzzz about them

(well, apart from the fact they share members with Raein)

I think there is a definite influence though. I understand your viewpoint and agree they are fundementally a post-rock band, but the chord sequences throughout the songs on The Perfect Tango could come from so many european emo bands..

What about the UK scene at the minute? Kids Return are so good! I literally haven't stopped playing the tongue tied lp since i got it.

About other bands.. yeah, of course Jawbreaker for days. Waiting curiously and patiently for the Thorns Of Life stuff to come out. Jets To Brazil had some moments.

I got back into Giant's Chair recently. Underrated mid 90's US stuff, but we love that kind of thing right? heh. Caulfield Records was/is the place to go for the 'Chair.

Some of the recent Able Baker Fox stuff is ok - post Small Brown Bike/Coalesce/Casket Lottery, etc. action for ya, if you haven't checked it out. "Voices" was a good release from last year.

END OF A YEAR << look into them. Rites of Spring for the NOW generation. I'm a fan. Recommended. SERIOUSLY.

Old Canes anyone? Chris Crisci from Apple Seed Cast's rawkin folk project from a few years ago. Good.

On a similar tip, i listen to ALOT of Rocky Votolato.

was well into some of this stuff around 95/96

Split Lip was real good. Then they were called Chamberlain.

all the Jade Tree stuff. Texas had ties to my hometown thru the band Copper..

lots of mystique around this stuff, a real special time from American rock imo
