4pin/6pin firewire

What's the difference between 6pin and 4pin firewire as far as external audio interfaces are concerned? I have 4pin socket in my laptop and I have heard that it's inferior in some way...

So 6pin firewire is powered from a computer and 4pin externally? When I decide to buy a firewire audio interface, do I have to make sure that it is 4 pin (so it would fit my laptop) or are they somehow compatibile?

They;re both the same - you can plug a 6 pin soundcard into a 4 pin latpop; it just wont power it.

My sound card came with a 6 pin lead, with a 6pin to 4pin adapter.

Most cards will come with the appropriate adapters...
