coincidentally id been looking for a little project idea to practice a new framework i need to get good at

so i'll bite. going to be loosely basing it on audiofinder (featurewise, before anyone assumes that means im ripping code) but if anybody has any feature requests or cool idea to chuck in the pot feel free to post it here/pm me/email me at pizzey.sam@googlemail.com

Wicked! :)

I realise there are two uses for a tool like this, one is as a sample organiser, the second is as a media player a la itunes/winamp/realplayer etc.

I don't know which way you'd be thinking of taking things, but I poersonally would love to be able to play files sequentally with no pause in between (ie drop & drag an album in to listen to the whole thing).

Others no doubt would love organisational features.

Thanks! :)

Hi ive made a very rough sketch of what i think would be required/awesome...

Clockwise from topleft;

You need;

* TWO file browsers - need two to easily move stuff around.

* Token alpaca :roll: for the DSF massive (in case youve not seen bit of a daft in joke round here, by all means forget... :6: :P)

* Waveform, with transport. It would be extremely helpful if you could click on the waveform to jump to that spot.

* File list in selected folder (left browser). Hope this makes sense... If you clicked on E.G. 'Dell' in my fictitious example above in the left browser, youd get a list of compatible files in the bottom left pane.

Its important that the file is 'released' (or whatever) so you can then drag it to your folder of choice in the right browser.

It would need to be able to read 16/24bit WAVs and MP3s as a bare minimum, FLAC would be hugely useful (to me at least), but not critical, similarly 32bit FP wavs/other esoteric formats. AIFF is pretty common (ish), REX/RX2 also useful but not critical, not sure how far you wanna take this. Could be potential to sell, as i said, no real competition atm, at $10-$20 a pop, you could poss sell millions... :D

I think that would summarise all I (personally) would need. Hopefully pretty basic/easy although i have no clue.

With regards to the waveform display, Wavelab and Soundforge (prob others) create a little file for each file for the waveform display (*.gpk for wavelab). This really speeds up loading times. You might want to consider this ? (up to you) - an option could be to scan the hard drive at some point, to generate all these files in advance ? Dunno, just a thought.

Wicked, well let us know if you need any further information, never used audiofinder myself, so cant comment, im basing this on the other thread on UAD forums.

Cheers,

Ben

Taking this on board; itd be difficult to do automatic 'next track' when playing with eg hat samples... all go by dead quick. I guess youd need a button to switch between;

Play Once
Play looped
Play All (in folder)

Playlists, personally no interest, i know you want it tho, any ideas how to combine ? Its hard to comment without knowing any programming how hard things are. It would unnecessarily complicate this IMO... sorry.

Without being funny, what could this offer than winamp etc cant do ? Apart from show the waveform? How would that help ? Sorry, just trying to understand where your coming from.

Ha ha, the only thing it would offer is the waveform!

It would make browsing and previewing tracks really fast, especially when you're itching to show off a drop to your friends! :)

Remember the 'if the first 30 seconds is good I'll listen to the whole tune rule'? That was so last millenium! I just want to be able to see where the drop is and skip the all the bullshit (and often boring) intros.

From a programming perspective, I unfortunately can't help. I know next to nothing about software development :(

why not use Audacity/Soundforge?

Think Winamp had a plugin or this tbh.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Audacity takes to long to load up (I tried several times to listen this way). As I said, Reapers media browser window does have a clickable waveform display and loads up audio really fast. What it doesn't have are all the features of winamp..

I have searched high and low for a winamp plugin that does this, but have yet to find one... If you know of one...... ;)

I guess I'll have to continue using Winamp for playlists and Reaper media browser for showing off drops to my friends...

It has an oscilloscope, not a fixed waveform view for quick browsing....

I'll email the creator and see if they can add the fixed waveform for browsing view..! :)

well, if we're asking for something we'd find useful.

i'd really like itunes to have the waveform display, with simple editing. cut copy paste normalize.

that would be bliss

Asked over on the Foobar forum and this was where things ended up. It seems I am not alone in wanting a media player with a full waveform display! :)

Thinking about it you could add a playlist where my alpaca is :cry: ... not sure were dragging this in all directions. As said previously two dif functions required. Up to mr programmer. on a purely selfish level id prefer media manager type dealy, still cant see what youd get out of a media player with gfx waveform, other than taking 1/2 second quicker to find the drop, but thats me (grandad) :lol:. However, a useful tool to spend an uncreative hour going trhu all your samples and filing them away would be well useful IMO.

In a pathetic attempt to get my own way id suggest that whoever makes this could charge a reasonable amount to the pro audio community... :6:

Hi Sam

Got your email today after checking that address for the first time in months :S

Anyway, yes it would be great to see a product available which covers the kinds of features of Audiofinder.

I am willing to test the product and offer feedback as you require.

add on has been made for foobar http://www.foobar2000.org/components/vi ... ve_seekbar

also for those that don't know you can get an addon so you can use asio drivers for foobar and an addon that automatically sets up a double blind listening test for you.

I think Reaper or Wavosaur are your answer.
I have set Wavosaur as my default wav & mp3 player.
It loads the tracks quickly and is a single executable file.
Light is an understatement.
