Missing link between Drum'n'Bass and Dubstep.

Post by izm » Sun Nov 12, 2006 3:21 pm

Eyo all.

You know you sometimes get a d'n'b album and somewhere at the end of it there's a track in a d'n'b tempo but with completely different approach to the rhythm section?

The one sounding pretty much like dub or instrumental hiphop or maybe minimal techno or some "how the fuck I listen to that?" type of style.

I first noticed that on Jonny L's Magnetic back in 1998 and got hooked on collecting such material on vinyl. I started playing radio sets composed of such stuff in 2003 after Amit has emerged and perfected the dub styles in d'n'b.

Now with al the dubstep hype I'm sometimes wondering - with all of the d'n'b influences how much does dubstep owe d'n'b? How much dubstep is there to be found in d'n'b and vice versa? How do those two relate to each other?

And with this in mind I recorded the set below. It's made entirely of Drum'n'Bass tracks but the ones where dub influences are most significant.

So check it out and tell me - is it still d'n'b? Or is it dubstep yet?

I hear what you're saying but really you have to look a lot earlier. Consider that dubstep starts forming around 2001, and it grows largely out of 2step garage, which was itself partly a reaction against drum and bass in the late-90s. It's more '93-'97 jungle that exerts a strong influence on people like el-b, kode9, etc. 2step and dubstep pretty much ignored more recent dnb until i guess the last few months when a lot of people from the dnb camp started taking notice of dubstep and making their own tracks.

Not a hell of a lot. There might be some superficial similarities at times but if you look at the way each works sonically and rhythmically they're doing very different things. Contemporary drum and bass doesn't even have much at all in common with mid-90s jungle.

haha, this is the same self-promoting prick who recently went to great lengths to trash dubstep, "a genre which will fade away just as quickly as it appeared", on dnb.pl. his posts set off a particularly funny flame war in which he was murked relentlessly and made to look a complete twat, much to the amusement of a large number of people.

showing up here is just sad, IZM.
