Always been dubstep?

well just in case anyone actually gives a monkeys i came from hiphop since 1984 (got my mum to buy me King Of Rock on wax by Run DMC) then when hiphop went gash (all that Neptunes business was the final nail) I stuck my head above the parapets and found DMZ (reminded me of the old scratch beats us DMC DJs used to practice to). Started to get some love for DNB about the same time.

Its funny cos i was from Luton and Garage was always big there and I always hated it cos i was hiphop and the garage lads were just scumbags (absolute rotters in fact) so i had this association with idiot wannabee rudeboys and Garage for years until Dubstep came along and kinda dragged me in.

As long as it sounds like it was made in an abandoned carpark in some gully estate and recorded on a C90 then I can normally get into it. This is also my excuse for my mixdowns being so shite ("yeah bruv its grimey though innit").

Maybe it is still the case I guess we will see but posters used to fly off the handle if your criticized Spaceape on here. I agree though tbh but I think he is like Burial, shite producer imo but people enjoy it (I enjoy it) I don't think you have to be the most gifted or the most technically inclined or even have much musical sense to be entertaining. 50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong.

I agree, I have no idea what Kode9 was thinking, picking the Spaceape as his MC. I mean, after the novelty of having a chimp as your MC wears off, all you're left with is an MC with opposable thumbs on his feet.

He should stop fucking around and just get a proper human to be his MC rather than a fucking ape.

Dubby Tribal House - and still bangin my head to it.

lots of bassweight.....check
all kinds of tribal drums......check
minimal with lots of spaces.....check
over-usage of delay.....check
used organic AND synthetic tones.....check
people get naked dancing to it.....check

A few other thoughts.

I can still spin these records though some of them are anywhere from 2-15 years old, and no one complains that I am playing old shit. The records have staying power in a scene where people are not even playing 6 week old tracks anymore.

I think he's sick. I found his voice nearly inaudible, I had no clue what he was saying so I just zoned in on Kode 9's beats. Then I started hearing what he was saying...he says some serious shit, to me anyway.

I've heard he's not too good live....that makes sense. If the sound ppl don't get that balance right it would sound like bullshit.

I dont mind his contribution to the Martyn album..... maybe its just when he teams up with Kode9 that it all goes wrong.

electric ladyland was the first album that made me interested in production.
king tubby was and always will be a top influence.
muggs' cypress hill instrumentals were the first beats that made me interested in sequenced music.
tech itch was the first extreme electronic music that really caught my attention.
jean jacques perrey keeps everything in perspective.

got into dubstep around 06...didn't understand what it was about at first and was quite happy with dnb. djake harassed me a bit and i downloaded that Juju mix. i was like ''yeah...i suppose i could get into this after a lot of bongs..'' and then earth a run red came on and i was like ''WHAAAAAAAAT THE FUCK!!!''

agree 100%. Can't get enough Spaceape + Kode9. Obviously I wouldn't want it in every single track, but it definitely has it's place.
