Nigel Richards (611 Records // Philly)

Nigel has certainly seen the world during his career which is now approaching two decades, having started his obsession with dance music DJ’ing in 1989! Germany, Brazil, England, Greece, Dominican Republic and Bulgaria are just a sampling of the places his deck wizardry has blessed along with nearly every state in the USA. Nigel is not a pigeonholed DJ of any genre. See what 40+ records, 3 mixed cd’s and a whole lot of globetrotting can do for a unique performer who is also a very personable guy. This experience shines as he rocks crowds with new sounds while still keeping the masses comfortable. Check out NigelRichards.com.

Joe Nice (DubWar, Gourmet Beats // Baltimore,MD)

Representing Baltimore, Joe Nice is universally recognized as the ambassador of the dubstep sound in North America and one of the purveyors of the sound worldwide with his upfront selection and skillful mixing. Joe's show on GourmetBeats.com was the first to feature dubstep in the states and this platform has spread the dubstep sound on the airwaves, across America and around the world. JoeNice is the first American-based DJ to play on London pirate radio, RinseFM. A member of GourmetBeats, resident at a monthly party in New York City called DubWar, recognized as one of URB's NEXT 100 for 2007, JoeNice is looking to make a difference. Be ready. He has quickly become the most sought-after US dubstep DJ and on August 14th he will show NYC exactly why that is.

Odi (Digital Konfusion, Konkrete Jungle, Methods NYC)

Odi as he is known to the world, does not look like the type to have a group of beautiful women fawning over him. And yet, there are several that I have to get through to talk to him. People murmur “respect” as we walk outside. Their admiration is not underserved. Odi, is in great part responsible for the entire style of jungle music in NYC. “I can’t think of anything that makes me happier,” he says. “Every show makes me better.”

Jungle or drum&bass is one of the evolutions of the 90s electronica wave, characterized by an emphasis on fast-paced breakbeat and prominent bassline. It was then, back in its formative years that Bronx-born, Harlem-raised Odi entered the scene and gave it his kind of direction. “I grew up around 125th street , the home of hip hop. So it was natural to be an aggressive DJ, putting in the hip hop elements. It’s what I know.” His break came around after high school, when running promotions for the famous NASA rave parties at Club Shelter grew into a steady DJing slot. From there, Odi and some childhood friends who shared a lifestyle, culture and musical interest began pumping out electronic records with their own signature twist.

“Jungle didn’t happen as a music until 96. Back then it was all just called breaks or techno was the common term,” Odi recalls. “Anything went back then. My friends and I got real lucky, being in the right place at the right time.” Fans would argue that it was not only the position but the skills that propelled Odi and his DJ crew, Digital Konfusion, into the underground limelight. Their way of mixing jungle beats with Hip Hop has grown into its own genre. “Jump up” has been the defining style of NYC and the east coast in general since 97, when the crew formed their own eponymous record label and began spinning at NYC’s most dedicated weekly jungle show: Konkrete Jungle. Odi rapidly became a fixture, while continuing to travel the country, one of the first few to enjoy such popularity.

Eventually Odi caught the ears of Malik Shabazz, the international spokesman for the respected Hip Hop society Zulu Nation. Shortly, he initiated Odi in 03, making the Harlem native the first junglist to enter the organization. “I really respected the work that they did,” says Odi. “And I try not to talk or brag about it, but it’s a very big honor.” Odi and his record label remained prolific in the recent year, DJing constantly while putting out a mix CD and producing for multiple other artists. His clothing line, Methods NYC is putting out a line of urban fashion inspired by the Jungle subculture. The next step for Odi is his upcoming artist’s album and taking his music online for digital distribution. But most of all, he would just like to continue playing, unconstrained by genre. “They have names for all the different styles, but I like it better when it was just music,” says Odi, smiling. “When it comes down to it, no one really knows the difference.” Words by Igor Kossov.

Odyssey (Digital Konfusion // NYC)

Odyssey, born and raised in Manhattan on the Upper East Side of Spanish Harlem, began spinning 23 years ago and has been producing for 12 years. His musical background is deeply rooted from the sounds of Disco, R & B, Soul, Funk, Jazz and Latin music. In the beginning of 1983 through 1984, he became more focused towards DJing. Throughout this point in time, Odyssey found himself getting into various forms of music from going to different clubs and checking out the new sound.

As time progressed through the mid 80's into the early 90's, he started getting booked for private functions and small venues. During his clubbing ventures, he found himself going to a weekly party at "The Shelter" called NASA. It was here where he occasionally played in the chill-out room alongside his brother I-Cue. One night while playing in the chill-out room, he met a group of club kids sharing the same love for electronic music.

The bond that he shared with these kids eventually lead into forming a crew of DJs / Artists and dancers which went by the name of "Digital Konfusion". Since his collaboration with them, Odyssey has traveled across the U.S.playing venues in states such as Philly, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Washington DC, Texas, and Florida. His travels lead him all the way to Europe playing five cities on a tour in Austria as well. He has spun at local venues as well such as Roxy, Roseland, Limelight, The Shelter, Tunnel, Twilo, Carbon and Centro Fly. He has also played alongside DJs Afrika Bambaattaa, Grand Wizard Theodore, Pal Joey, Little Louie Vega, Eric Morillo, Roy Davis Jr., Benji Candelario, Frankie Bones, Armand Van Helden, Roger Sanchez, Baby Hec Romero and the list goes on.

During the years of 1999 through 2001, Odyssey has released 4 records on various labels. All electro-Break Beat re-mixes such as the Fire re-mix featuring Afrika Bambatta (Jungle Sky Records/Liquid Sky Music), Petition the Lord (Digital Native Attack Records), Bad Acid Jesus (Radikal Records/Azucar Entertainment), and Reven Tergof (Entry 1 Records). Through his musical style and talent, Odyssey is considered one of New York City's top 10 most versatile DJs, mixing everything from Disco, Funk, Soul, R & B, Nu Wave, House, Hip-Hop, Techno, Electro and Break Beats flawlessly.

To wrap it up, simply, there are no words to further explain how enjoyable his sets are except to witness them first hand for yourself. So come take a trip on a musical "Odyssey".

I-Cue (Ingenious Music, Digital Konfusion // NYC)

Surviving on talent and desire while ingeniously creating a unique experimental blend of Hip Hop / Drum and Bass music known as Hip Step (Hip-Hop Influenced Productions Stimulating The Earth People) drawing from diverse musical backgrounds, I-Cue is out to make more than a little noise introducing his sound to a wider audience.

A true innovator in a world of followers, I-Cue holds the title of Hip Step pioneer... one of the few in the world. As a skilled turntablist / junglist, he brings diversity to the crowd, bridging hip hop and drum and bass into a style now known as hip step - drum and bass and hip hop as one.

I-Cue has also shown a range of production styles with numerous acid jazz / hip hop releases dating back from 1994 to 1996 on a label called New Breed Records. This is the point in I-Cue's career (and history) where the hip step genre began to develop - a subgenre of the new jungle hop / jump up genre. In 1996, he was signed to the infamous Liquid Sky Records.

Near the end of the millenium, he was the brainchild behind many hip step productions under the moniker "Mike & Ike", as well as other releases of his own on the Liquid Sky / Jungle Sky record label, such as "On A Journey", "Plutonic", "Deja Vu", "U Know My Steeze" (released under moniker Blunderground Massive), and the New York City hip step anthem "Next Level $#it" featuring T.R.A.C. in 2000.

Not only is I-Cue one of the most skillful turntable technicians in the US Drum and Bass scene, this native New Yorker has spun at the now legendary NASA and is presently a resident at Plan B Sundays as well as Konkrete Jungle NYC.

His skills are ingenious, his tracks are creative and unique, and he is a pro as he lays down the experimental foundation of the hip step style - a hybrid mash-up of hip hop, jungle, drum and bass, and breaks.

DJ VANDAL (Digital Konfusion, Methods NYC)

DJ VANDAL was born in Odessa, USSR and grew up in New York City. He was introduced to tagging and street art during his early years in Forest Hills, Queens. In 1989 he was recruited by the Beyond This World crew and has been reppin' it ever since.

All the while collecting music on tapes and records, he was a regular on the nightlife circuit in various “scenes”. A common vibe and goal led to his affiliation with Digital Konfusion in ‘95. Together the crew organized the infamous “Defyin the Tribes” outlaw parties held underneath a highway uptown in Harlem. Different DJs played different genres, bringing together a variety of cultures and music enthusiasts. DJ VANDAL specialized in DrumNBass/Jungle but was able to showcase many styles including HipHop, House, Electro, and 80s, a multi-genre format the Digital Konfusion crew is now known for.

DJ VANDAL is a longtime veteran of the party circuit in NYC, having played most weeklies that have come and gone over the years. Together with fellow DK member, ODI, he held down the monthly Strategic Sessions for many years at Konkrete Jungle. DJing mostly on the East Coast in the United States, he has built a reputation with his party sets and had the opportunity to play across Europe on a 3week/8city tour. His mixes are regularly spotlighted on the "Digital Konfusion Mixshow" on FM4 in Austria and his mixing has been featured on many online radio programs and podcasts.

In the late 90's, he began to work on various graphic design projects: Logos, flyers, lucite design, photo-retouching, catalogues, corporate identity, film titles, web graphics, album covers, package design, commissioned canvas, commercial sets, and the list goes on and on. Since 2005 he has been working as Art Director on a range of projects including MethodsNYC streetwear, MainCourseMusic, and BigTimeWriters.

FTL (Digital Konfusion, Methods NYC)

FTL has been representing the Hip-Hop movement since he was a little kid living in Brooklyn. In his early days, his form of expression was through break-dance and collecting music. His knowledge of a wide variety of music showed in his collection, but what showed the most was his loyalty and passion for true HIP-HOP lifestyle and music. It would eventually lead him to get off the dance-floor and to get behind the "wheels of steel" himself. There he easily showed NEW YORK CITY that he can DJ a party better than most.

FTL has been organizing and deejaying many of his own events throughout the New York tri-state area for the past several years. He has played at numerous venues with his well known dj crew, Digital Konfusion, that consists of DJs Odi, I-Cue, Odyssey, Joe-Joe, and DJ Vandal. Along with his crew he's played at parties with DJs such as Afrika Bambaataa, Marley Marl, Teddy Ted, Special K, Spinna, DJ Hype, Danny the Wildchild, A Guy Called Gerald, SoulSlinger, Dmitry from Deee-Lite,Sameer,Joeski,Reid Speed, Mathematics, Andi Hanley,J-Live, IXL,LS-One,Fifth Platoon and many more hip-hop,house and drum&bass DJs. By playing with such a variety ofDJs that play totally different styles,he has proven to many people that he can mix hip-hop with the best mixing DJs in other genres and hold his own. He is very often the only hip-hop DJ on the line up full of house or drum&bass DJs. When it comes to mixing any style of music, FTL shows he is one of the best around.

FTL has also been working in the studio as well. His debut production single "The Antidote" featuring AKBAR (formerly of Illbogie records) on DIGITAL KONFUSION RECORDS, has become a true underground favorite and it's been played in parties from New York, to Berlin, to London, to Paris to LA and back. It shows that his level of skill in production matches his skill in rocking a club. He has also done a few shows as Akbar's dj where he gets to do a whole new side of the DJ world as a show DJ. FTL has also played overseas in Europe. He traveled with the Rane mixer champion DJ IXL and underground M.C. Poison Pen from the Stronghold crew. Together the three of them performed at a big show in Budapest Hungary where he also was the show dj for Poison Pen. They also did a few radio shows while they were out there. FTL went on to travel throughout Austria with fellow DK member, DJ Joe-Joe, the host of the Digital Konfusion Mixshow out of Vienna. Together they also kept quite a few parties going all night long throughout Austria and the Alps. The Digital Konfusion Mixshow on FM4 broadcasts from Vienna and continues to play mixes by FTL for the five countries in Europe it broadcasts to, as well as it's worldwide online listeners.

Recently FTL has been deejaying for the Methods NYC clothing line. He deejayed for the 2007 Fall Release and 2008 Spring Release parties as well as for the Flagship Store Opening Party. Some of the talent that performed for those events were Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Hype, Jeru The Damaja, Sadat X, Group Home, Heltah Skeltah, Keith Murray and many more. FTL's credibility for Hip-hop in the New York club scene and music industry, has put him in the position of working with some of the best underground MCs in the studio and deejaying some of the hottest events. Whether it is a local hip-hop night, industry event, clothing release party, open mic, all house event, or a drum&bass party, he knows what it takes to get the party live and get people on the dance floor. Be on the look out for even more to come from FTL.
