indian classical dubstep...

Post by khenu » Tue Nov 14, 2006 2:05 am

hi,

this is my first post. i have a sketch of a track up - "hope and dread:"

http://www.myspace.com/rootsandwires

the speech is one given by jawaharlal nehru on the eve of india's independence in 1947. the sarod is a studio recording i did this past winter in new delhi - it's raag charukeshi and performed by one of ustaad amjaad ali khan's top disciples. the recording towards the end is from a train ride from my father's home town to new delhi, in 1999.

anyway, it's still an early sketch and i'm fairly new to production... most simply put, i look at it as somewhat of an ambient half step piece or something to start out or close a set... i would love some constructive criticism from you all. at this point i'm trying out some ambient pads and i'm also sequencing some street sounds, car horns, sirens, and so on...

peace,

sak

Respect to Khenu - this man has some wicked found sound work and a solid understanding of low end.

He is also really open to learning so let him have it! ;)

Welcome, man. :D

i cant access myspace from any of my computers but from your approach i'd say things are looking good for you... you have a clear vision of the direction you want to take, and you've gone out into the world to source material... both massive steps towards creating something great

sorry i cant give anything more specific, i just wanted to highlight how much time ive got for you taking recordings out in india and such, its that kind of thinking that will make great music in my opinion, technical skills are easy to come by, they just take time

cool direction.
decent production too.
some really nice moments in this where the bass n sarod hit unison.
there does seem to be a degree of separation in the 2 elements still.
keep doin what yr doin. it has a lot of potential...

much respect and thanks for the responses and private e-mails!

i would love more technical feedback and composition-related ideas.

i'm going to try a filter on the sarod as someone e-mailed me - let's see how that sounds. i'm torn between keeping the flow of the original alaap (development of the raga) and taking some loops from it (which i have done a bit) and rearranging it - i think i will probably do a bit more of that, to get some more emotional resonance and interplay with the drums, and to more mindfully shape the emotional experience more over the course of the arrangement... wicked - thanks!

peace,

k
