Up faders vs X faders

Post by lowpass » Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:12 pm

How many of you use up as opposed to X when Dj'ing?

I started using the X when I started practising on traktor

When I got my decks I switched to the Up (having 2 hands as opposed to one mouse click)

However I started messing with the X again the other day just to keep things interesting and the transitions were a lot smoother than before.

honestly depends on what i'm mixing/doing - i would say most of the time i keep the x-fader in the middle and just work the channel faders.

if i'm playing jungle/dnb and rinsing back and forth, i'll typically use the x-fader more

When I play hip-hop it's almost all crossfader, when I play house, techno, dub, etc I almost use only the upfaders and no cross at all.

i just play hip-hop so it's always the crossfader. for ten minute perfect blends when nobody knows when one track is ending and another beginning use the upfaders.

Always up fader mixing but I'll use the crossfader for little tricks or whatever.

For me it's x about 99% of the time
My up n downs are basicly there to keep the levels even, but once in a blue moon I will use them for fading.

I'm from a hip hop / scratching background tho.

i think the gen consensus will be just beatmatching edm shit upfaders
scratching and coming from hip hop background xfader
both do the same when setup right on a mixer
focus on your eqs and gain knobs and keeping in yellow not red imo

You guys spawned my interest on the subject

I guess I'd like to know where my cross fader is as well as my levels?

My mixing is kind of rough without them

This is my system

I would recommend using the channel faders when playing out. Some mixers have different setups that are more suited towards scratch DJs so the x-fader may have a funny curve and catch you off guard.

If you get use to using the channels you can normally get longer mixes and you get use to the levels quicker than trying to mess around with hamster buttons and shit like that in a dark club. Shit, I have even seen a mixer in France that had the hamster and curve on the back of the mixer!
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
