Reverbs & Delays - Do You Insert or Use Sends?

Post by contakt321 » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:47 pm

Hey there, sorry if this is a noob-y question:

When using Reverbs and Delays, do you apply them per instrument on the channels you want them or do you just use a send adjust the send amount of each channel as needed?

Also, why?

Just trying to understand if there is a value to having several different reverbs or delays with different settings or if I should just have 1 or 2 on a send and adjust the send amount.

Thanks in advance!!!

if you want things to sound like they are in the same room, put em on a send

personnally I like to have different reverbs on channels or sub-mixes, this may be a new school approach but I prefer it on the mixes spatially (and for control)

I know many who do it thru bussing

I use sends. It's habit really.

I think it's just what sounds better to you. I like to automate the sends and then switch which channel goes to which reverb at certain times, so I use sends.

I don't know if there's technical advantages/disadvantages to inserts or sends...sound quality or anything like that.

maybe for the inserts - it's a CPU load issue. if your comp is good it won't matter.

edit: wait, in the hardware world, how does this work. surely there's no inserts right?

as in mixdown > send
as in creativity > insert

I use both. Most verb and delays have a wet/dry knobs so I usually use it as an insert when I want the verb for a specific sound. I use sends for things that I intend to use on multiple channels and usually that is real light just to tie everything together.

better to bounce delays to audio to avoid nasty phasing and having the control of killing them so you're not cluttering your mix.

reverbs the same, mostly.

Creative questions like this aren't noobish to ask because everyone has their own way of going about mixing.

Personally I like to use multiple Reverbs and use sends to different ones to give each part their own "space" the bonus to this is you can blend in different reverbs, e.g nice big plate reverb on the snare, with a small amount of a more natural "warmer" reverb

yeah i like to use sends for Reverbs in particular - partly so you can have 2 or 3 and send various different things to them, to get a consistent sound, but also because i like to EQ or effect the reverb return without affecting the original signal.

This, I totally forgot, I like to take a lot of low end out of my reverbs, helps keep the mix a little tidier
