I used an audiophile 2496 for years in my PC, it kicked ass. On my powerbook i mostly use an echo indigo DJ or my m-audio firewire solo.

im pretty ghetto :6:

E-MU's new 1616M PCI Digital Audio System delivers everything you need to produce audio on a PC with professional results- 24-bit/192kHz converters (the same A/D converters used in Digidesign®'s ProTools® HD 192 I/O interface)

dont think that'll be your soundcard. I couldnt set my 0404 to low latencies when i used several softsytnhs on my old p4 2.8ghz, but since i moved onto a dual core athlon its not a problem. So, it sounds like you're running out of CPU power. What you running?
is it?

NO.

2.8dualcore p4 nothing wrong with that it is definatley the sound card it works fine for a bit on a low latencey like 10 then you have to change it every so often
