FRMNT006-SHORTSTUFF-PROGRESSION/RELAPSE/A
The man known as Shortstuff may lack in latitude, but luckily his beats more than make up for it with attitude. Showing just why labels like Berkane Sol, Pollen,Ramp and Planet Mu are hitting him for beats, his latest three-tracker for Formant delivers a diverse set of sounds with dancefloor weight and plenty of twists and turns.
‘Progression’ kicks things off with a shuffling native rhythm and analog bleeps borrowing from the best of minimal, before it seamlessly morphs into a percussive strutter, guaranteed to get necks snapping.
The analog theme continues on ‘Relapse’ with its back and forth drums riding low slung organ pads. A four/four kick and solid bass soon joins the party, giving the strong and shifting melodies plenty to hold on to.
Shortstuff changes gears yet again on ‘A’, with deep, dubbed out stabs and concrete percussion. Underpinned with fat, warping sub and clever drumrolls, ‘A’ is like Shortstuff himself – understated, but packing a mean punch.
A genuinely diverse showcase for Shortstuff, and another sure shot from the always consistent Formant.
