Making those Seriusly dirty leads (NI Massive)
Ive been playing around with massive recently and im starting to feel some limits within the program.
You may say its down to experiance.
But ive been using massive for like 6 months now.
The sounds im creating some how are all too similar.
Im not saying massive is bad but, i need a diffrent look at it.
Ive been told that reason's Malstrom is used frequently for making those "wow" leads.
But i dont use Reason.
(Yeah, just a "Im bored thread.")
Tell me what you use to make your dirty leads?!?

Zeta+ is really good for harsh leads. They're not warm like Albino but for "modern" synthy leads it can create some awesome stuff!

Re: Making those Seriusly dirty leads (NI Massive)
this one time (3 or 4 years ago) I was so fed up with my lack of synthese skills that I got myself a microphone and just randomly yelled innit, something like YUUUUARARARARAGGHHHHHHH, then I processed it in renoise, added a tad distortion, some chorus, reverb, dblueglitch and voila, instant dirty unique lead...Widelows wrote:Ive been playing around with massive recently and im starting to feel some limits within the program.

I'll try to find that MP3 somewhere...

They both use Massive + loads of processing.Widelows wrote:That sounds really wierd, would like to hear the results.roodbwoy wrote:

yeah, do what I do, sometimes when you're out of inspiration to create a tune, or don't have that much time, or you're just fucked up whatever, open your synth of choice and start creating patches... just try eveything, every knob, every value, if you have something which sounds good, save it like coolsound_1, then adjust it further, when you wreck it restore coolsound_1, when you find another coolsound save it as coolsound_2.Widelows wrote:Right, so thats okay.
Im gonna just sit at my studio tonight and make as many diffrent presets as i can.
Ive never actually processesed my lead.
But im sure i could have a go.
Cheers lads!
this way you're still producing but you're also learning your synth and maybe, just maybe you'll find that lead which puts you on the map
Thats what i do too.
But i need to mess around with effects also, like adding distortion.
i hate having no inspiration. but i like to try and recreate a sound, like say datsik's Game Over track.
I set my mind on makin the lead from that.
But then i change it ofcourse!

lately, and thanks the crafty advice of some veterans on this forum, i've been trying out the technique of cutting down my leads into 3 segments and then playing with plugins. first, i get a real grimey, gritty sound in albino (all 4 osc's running at different octaves... play with the waveforms until you get something you really like), which i like to call the source.Widelows wrote:Thats what i do too.

at that point, i send that source sound out to 3 different tracks in ableton... each track will be filtering out either solely the lows, mids or his. from here, ill just experiment by dropping some combination of one of the following: PSP nitro, Camel phat, camel space, vintage warmers, on each track and playing with their built in presets.
send each of these channels back into an aggregate track and play around some more if need be!
and btw, before you start really processing, it helps if you just draw out 2 measures or so of midi (with some lfo rate automation) keep this thing looped and then just use your ears and play around. go back and re-edit this once you finally have the sound you want.
not sure what vsts you are running, but nonetheless, this same technique can likely be applied to whatever you are working with. it has really helped me a ton and if you haven't already tried it, im sure it will help you... especially for that datsik/excision sound. though, they probably take it a step further and re-sample/re-process once everything i just listed is done... not sure
I remember once with Massive I was fiddling around until ended up making the sound of a rooster/chicken. A bit of the cockadoodledoo shit...and also the general sound they make when they're either runnin away from something or just passing about.
I finished about 95% of the tune then just moved onto something else...it wasn't sitting right with me at the time. But I might go back to it and see what's good.
if you dive deep into to the ocean of Massive, there's endless possiblities (i guess like with most synths)

ive only been using it for about year and half and every bassline i make is getting better and better i think i know the vst well but there so much more to learn
Ive only just started experimenting with the bend - / + and formant there some serious sounds you can come up with by alot of processing
Im yet to try Zeta + But ive heard good reviews about this aswell
