this north/south london thing.
what's the history of all the beef? is it just wives tales and folklore, or was there some event that went down that started it? why is the dividing line the river thames?
is there east/west london beef as well?
i'm not trying to raise the hornet's nest, but google is not helping me understand this.

local rivalries exist everywhere often by virtue of little more than geographical proximity.
the north / south london thing is just perpetuated by living in a city with a dirty great river cutting it in half.
rivalries exist between each axis of the compass but south usually gets the brunt of antipathy because the rest of london is on the other side of the Thames, including the majority of central london, meaning that a lot of people rarely venture south and believe the grim myths.
To be honest the rivalary is no where near as intense as in other places in the uk, especially when football become involved.
And as you see on this boar,d it's usually just jovial; people repping their ends rather than any real beef.

I think the origins of the North/South London thing has something to do with licensed taxi drivers. Traditionally these talk-radio-loving-fat-bellied know it alls are required to chant their mantra 'Sorry guv, I'm not going saarf of the river this time of night' every time someone even whispers Peckham Rye or Vauxhall Cross. I think that's what started it off, back when Sherlock Holmes and Eliza Doolittle were alive and hackney carriages had horses on the front.
you say that boomnoise but trust me anytime i meet anyone from south @ fwd the shank is saying alot...boomnoise wrote:

Nah i actually grew up in south east london (charlton) and moved to north (tottenham) when i was 16 & for me the two are proper, proper different... even so i don't think this leads to much actual north/south beef.. (we were more likely to fight the school down the road than try and have a fight on the other side of the river..)
SE7 / N15 all day!!
south london is a lot younger than north london - in the sense that it was largely fields/small towns round here 300 years ago, until the gaps were filled in between the centre of london and small conurbations like clapham, croydon, wimbledon etc. anyway historically it's not as big a deal, and the tube map reflects that to an extent (check drumzofthesouth for a cool inverted tube map).
as a result there's a slight sense of 'south london isn't proper london' coming from the north, and as a corollary south london has a bit of a 'screw you, yes we are' attitude. time out did a split north/south front page once, and then tried to break down how the two halves were different - laughable when they had a 'typical sth/nth ldn man and woman' picture spread - like how do people dress differently on different sides of the river??
anyway i'm always up for repping this side of the river. probably stems partly from working at the south london press (you can ask georgina about how this boosted her sth ldn pride as well), and from standing on the terraces at wimbledon (not the tennis, tcha!) and singing "south london, nah nah nah, south london, nah nah nah" at spurs/arsenal fans. also sth ldn grime pride in essentials/south agents/south soldiers, and this incredible, incredible song:

The Mercury!! are you stupid!! i never understood why no south MCs ever used this in a bar..mos dan wrote: anyway i'm always up for repping this side of the river. probably stems partly from working at the south london press (
lol i know!! the mercury's actually the slp's sister paper, i used to write for them too (film column, 'arts &leisure' pieces). so if you ever read about any crap deptford-based theatre groups around three years ago, that was prob mebenjybars wrote:apart from the south london press , the other local paper we got was 'The Mercury' which covered greenwich/charlton/woolwich/ etc... what a great name for a grime newspaper!!
