I know, I know. It has to be done. It's the feeling of trying to "sell" something to somebody...maybe not "sell" as in money, but just the attention seeking part of it. But yeah it's what needs to be done...

either people are gonna like it, or not like it.

i know what you are saying, but if you are upping it in the right place, and in the correct manner, whats to worry about?

thats what dubs is for, new releases and just a general place to allow people to check out what you have

This threads proper true, I have often contacted producers I proper respect and sent them tunes, some have just said "thanks" and some have gave me, practically an essay of feedback, some have said to lock into their radioshow cause they're going to play it and some have, some haven't..

Its just what you gotta do with ya music - behind closed doors and doing things on a personal level is the one i have found..

Most people appreciate someone taking their time out of their day to contact them so they give them the same respect back and will talk to you and give you feedback or whatever.

Well what I mean is, if you really respect an artist or label, you take your time out and send them a PM on myspace/find their aim/pm on the forum or send an email and speak to them on a personal level, make idle chitchat and what not... Don't just rush to the "LOL MATE I GOT TUNES YOU WANT EM?" because that makes you sound like everyone other person who contacts them.

Its called diplomacy :W:

Obviously for labels its slightly different if you're sending demos!

I think the most exposure I get is when someone clicks on my link in my sig after I've made an interesting post on here.

But yeah, that whole "it's not what you know, but who you know" adage still rings true. And if you don't know them, buy them a beer

I'm not signed, I'm not recognised, and I'm still fairly new to all this, but this exact advice has been my method the whole time.

I don't spam much, I don't pester labels or DJ's all the time, simply because I know that my productions aren't up to the level I want them to be. So whilst I've been improving my craft over the last year, I've also been building my connections by befriending local producers and DJ's.

That way, not only do you gain an important connection, you also make a few friends on the way!

Obviously, it helps if your tunes are quality.

Over the last year, I've got more work, exposure, and gotten a lot deeper into the scene just by building connections in a freindly way in real life.

A little favour here, supporting other local artists/promoters there, helping out etc goes a long way.

Patience is the key. And it's starting to pay off in unexpected ways, and seems to open up new doors you might not have thought of.

yes yes of course, like if you send someone a pm saying YO YO YO I GOT SOME NEW BIG TUNES INIT PLAY IT ON UR SETT!!

first of all you look like a twat, normal people don't talk like that your not from USA, your from uk your meant to speck your mother language which is English for most people.

2nd, you are must likey not to get a reply, you seem un-human to work with or play any of your songs. ( )

3rd as a personally thing, has this worked for you ? have you tried to contact someone whom you have alot of respect and was there a reply?

because i have not tried this my self, and to tell you the truth i would be quite afraid to send a person i respect a PM to say would you have any share time to look at this? well not so afraid but trying not me make my self look like a dick, however on the flip side i have send PM's out to a very small number of people(1/2 max) saying that how good i think he/she music is, and saying look am not sending you a PM to get any 320's of you for free or anything i genuinely showing some love to the music. this was to Apathesis btw

The following producers exemplify the right way of doing things.

They have never spammed me, my Myspace profile or DSF.

They all respond to emails on a personal level, no 'hyped big headed' responses.

They have all been amazingly kind in sharing tunes with me at different points.

The quality of their music speaks for themselves.

The Widdler
Zeno
Thark
Dom Haywood (was Drifterman)
Noiz
Cadava
Ylem

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I learnt about these guys by stumbling across them, either on this forum or Myspace. (I always follow links in signatures if someone makes interesting posts. I always follow 'top friends' links on Myspace when I like an artist.)

Without the need for advertising, I follow their news every time I see new things posted up on their Myspace (or things land in my email!).

Being one of their fans, I promote their tunes at every opportunity to the people I meet.

I look up to these guys for being self-respecting artists and pushing the dubstep sound forwards!

Thanks and good luck with the music! :)

I think everyone is making a good point without doing it on purpose. PLZ DONT TIPE LYKE DIS - OI M8 CHK ME TUNES OUT AND LET US KNOW WHAT U THINK. When I get proper chav PM's I am just ready to blast their music, just rubs me the wrong way. You want to be a professional producer, start acting like one INNIT BRUV :6:

And BTW why do you people always say "let US know" when you made the tune by yourself?

I think it might be a british thing, i know quite a few people who say let us know, instead of let me know but that generally means, let me know and I'll tell everyone else.

Makes a lot of sense actually, maybe American's should say this too  I have had to back out of releasing tunes because the producer couldn't provide a decent mixdown as nicely as I put it they usually don't speak to me again, probably because they had some pussy on the line with the signing and told everyone they know about it  Whatever tho I can't put out shite, against my religion.

Some very interesting points in this thread!

One thing that I've never really heard anyone talk about is ... quality of design/art on myspace. I know alot of you think that the music is the only important thing, screw the art, the artist/track names, bio, design, info, etc. But I think it's very important if your approaching other people/labels/djs that your myspace doesn't look like an eyesore or bland/boring/offensive.

The way I see it is: you wouldn't give something to someone in real life (hoping to impress them) if your looking scruffy and unkept. Just like how you guys mention not using CAPS in your messages, and approaching people in a professional manner, the same should apply to how you present your myspace. If you have tracks named as 'FUCK OFF PISSFLAP' or have huge images that stretch horizontally and make me scroll right just to get to your player, or a myspace that takes ages to load, or even a myspace that causes my browser to temporarily freeze due to all the flash videos embedded in it, than it's not really helping your cause!!

Ultimately your trying to sell a brand (you), your brand of music, your brand of talent. I've seen some some myspace designs that truly look like a 10 year old's made it, didn't entice to listen to the music, and certainly didnt entice me to come back to it again. I'm not saying the visuals have to be amazing, just something that's easy to read and use. Cos the first port of call for most people if they wanna find out more about an artist is their myspace. So it makes sense to present yourself properly and professionally if you wanna be taken seriously.

Ofcourse this all sounds like bullshit if you think music > everything else. But maybe it's worth thinking about ..

Nah you're 100% right there mate - BUT this does come down to knowing the trade of HTML/CSS coding, a lot of people use generators with their favourite colours (not saying I don't!) and some people call that "boring"

but I HATE when I go 'pon someones myspace and it has pictures of stupid things everywhere and loads of videos - it just makes you look like you're a bit of a bum who dun give a shit about much, which in hindsight means you don't care about your music and often makes me lock off the page instantly. (for the record this is all opinion, you might care about your music)

But it is key to have a clean, fast loading myspace with a nice little bio to read while you listen to the tracks, oh and a easily found ADD TO FRIENDS button! Fack I hate when people don't code their buttons right and it goes to the "Send message" page when you click add to friends
