EARPLUGS

Post by elgato » Thu Nov 30, 2006 1:04 pm

ok so im gonna make the dive

is it definately worth the cash to get moulded rather than one-size-fits-all?

is it about the ER15s? seems like 9s arent enough but 25s might be too quiet? will 15s provide adequate protection in most club environments?

i wish i'd done this earlier so i could come dmz, but im too prang now! ive been getting fizzing a lot so i dont want to go over the edge!

I reckon you can use musicians' earplugs from your local drum shop for most applications, and yes a -15dB reduction should be adequate.

more info here init: http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=9832

edit: £150+ is a lot to drop on moulded earplugs, but yes worth it in the end. The fit is absolute, and a lot more comfortable. If you can spend the money I'd say go for it.

yeh ive read through that, as well as various websites and reviews, but they didnt contain the specific answers i was after, and i know a few people on here know the crack

is the only difference between moulded / non-moulded comfort? or is there a difference in the protection they give?

If you can afford to, I would definately go for the custom moulded 15s. I intend to in the near future.

Get ER20s in the meantime though, I wouldn't go to a dance without them.

I would say got for 15s, I have the 25s which are really good but my mate went to get some and the lady said get 15s 'to be on the safe side' and that's the person doing it so 15s should be more than enough.

Yeah, I've got to get me some of them...

Pretty sure I saw Yunx using those, or similar when he played up here.

no chance of stretching to the custom fit ones at the moment though!
Specially with *****mas coming up.

er20s from there

less then £15 delivered

same filters (Apparently) as the custom moulded ones - and a 1/10 of the price

It's cool that the filter is the same, but if the plugs themselves aren't moulded to fit your ear canals the same filters won't be anywhere near as efficient. Having said that they're still good, and excellent value, but if you're serious enough about your hearing to spend the money it's moulded all the way.

Yunx uses moulded er25s apparently - the highest decibel reduction you can get standardly. I made the mistake of getting 9s - as you can buy filters seperately I'll be getting some 15s soonish. 9 is fine for most things, but stuff like subdub will still be pretty damaging.

but if i get 25s might i find myself frustrated sometimes by the volume being too low? i know this is a personal thing but does anyone have experience with the 25s who can tell me their experiences?

i have the ER-15s. -15db reduction is more than adequate for dj-ing/raving purposes.

you have to bear in mind that decibels work on a logarythmic scale: for every +10db the volume gets twice as loud.

so a -15db reduction is effectively making the music 2-and-a-half times quieter.

my audiologist says thats more than enough and i agree with him. in fact sometimes if the system isnt mega-loud they almost seem too quiet, and i have no hearing damage whatsoever.

oh yeah, and get molded cos its not just a comfort thing. as UFO said, unless the plugs block out all sound (i.e. by being molded to your ear) then the filters won't be able to work efficiently and you'll get coloured sound.

Agree with all of this... I've got the moulded ER-15's and they are perfect...

If you can stretch to the moulded ones get em.. they reduce the volume just enough and are comfortable.. I wear em for long periods of time at work or in clubs and you almost forget they are in..

What is scary tho is when you take them out, i wanted to just do an A-B on the dancefloor and it actually hurt my ears, you just av to put em back in.. Worrying that i used to go to dances for years without them really... deffo a factor why i now get ringing in my ears..

got the -25's, -15's weren't enough for me, still had some ringing in my ears when I got home. There's is no difference in volume btw between the two. At least not noticable...

actually, I've got the -30's, I came from the -25's
Mayby because they filter the dangerious frequencies instead of blocking them totally (like the foam ones) so it's barely noticable. Or I am completely wrong and talking bs. All I can say is that out of experience I don't notice any difference. :)
This is the chart from my earplugs
Image
Algemeen = general
Hoge tonen = High tones
Midden tonen = mids
Lage tonen = lows

so there's barely any difference in the high and mids but a lot in the lows.

I use them to play out and to party.
