Producers who don't DJ

Post by neutral » Thu Sep 17, 2009 4:58 pm

Saw a thread the other day asking about DJs who don't produce. Just wondering if theres any successful producers who don't DJ?
I say 'successful' because theres obviously a ton of guys who make beats in their bedroom, and never get a break and I'm thinking maybe this is because they can't get the same kind of exposure that a DJ/Producer can. Thoughts?

It also depends on what you mean by "DJ"...

There are plenty of producers than CAN dj, but don't really do it much. IE- those who primary produce and maybe play live through Ableton... but might not have a lot of experience on the wheels of steel.

It also depends on what genre you are talking about... if it is mainly a club-oriented genre like dubstep... a lot do DJ, if for no other reason, because they were DJ's first. In fact, I wish more in dubstep would indeed play live.... cos there are some acts who came up through the ranks playing live sets, but once they got a break, went into dj mode in order to capitalize on playing popular tracks to large audiences.

I guess what I am saying, is that it kinda offends me when someone booked as playing a live set plays other people's tracks. I wouldn't mind it in the slightest as long as they are booked and promoted as doing a DJ set... but if they are promoted as playing live, I expect it to be their own tracks. Even their remixes of other people's tracks count. Just not regular old other people's tracks. You know?

I think the reason I feel strongly about it is-- cos there are lots of people who can DJ reasonably well. If what sets apart the top tier from the rest is the dubplates they can get ahold of... well, then that is more a privilege thing than skill thing. However- still the mark of a truly golden DJ. Nothing to be scoffed at- but different from a live act who has to try to put together sets so ill that they can compete with their own tracks against those playing crowd favorites.

With no experience on the subject, I think it would be fun as hell to play other's tracks, or to play ur own tracks or whatever, just play some tracks. I know its a bizness and what not, but just seems like it would be fun as hell.

They can still get exposure online and through DJs looking for tracks to play out. If they're good enough they get the exposure they deserve.

Ableton LIVE is killing the scene. People with no experience in DJing are getting booked playing other peoples tracks in clubs while playing solitaire!

I hate this new generation of so called 'live' sets.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

There's a core group of vinyl cats who hate the CDJ people...and then they both hate the Ableton people.

the Ableton ppl will hate the Nu-ExcelsiortronicX2X2+ 5000/###jp*777)^^^333quantum (by Futurioso Inc) users in 2030.

Who cares? If they play music they play music...co

you realise most ableton players worth their salt aren't actually doing this? These people are more likely to be using iTunes or WMP

i saw coki play at bestival. id heard that he literally couldnt mix and would just spin back/stop every tune, and had been reported as saying sumin like 'sorry, im a dj not a producer'. he was alright when i saw him though, he played a fat set and the mixing wasnt so bad it ruined it.

So its pretty much just Burial who doesnt mix and everyone else at least atempts to do it, then?

Me thinks Mr Burial is a lazy fuck in that case :)

I've read that Burial used to mix on radio stations etc, but stopped when he released his first album because he was shit... To be honest, he doesn't seem to be much of a producer at the moment either, I haven't heard anything for ages...
