Haha after reading that article, it sounds like everybody was going NUTS and the reviewer was just chilling in the back, totally sober, with a pad and pen deeply analyzing everything and taking notes

Sometimes it’s almost gothic: it would make great interstitial music for the next “Twilight” movie.

hahaha imagineeeeee that's the shittest idea anyone has ever had

exactly. and how big is the knot in your pocket that you wouldn't license your tunes to a movie that big?

If you put tunes out and sell them for money, why would the principle suddenly change when a movie came along? I guess I tend to prefer tunes that sound like they would go well in a David Lynch film, but I wouldn't mind making some stacks with my tunes on an OST that will sell several hundred thousand copies... if nothing else that would be a good paycheck and hella promotion.

That said... lol wut?

What the shit were they listening to?

that's exactly what it seems like. overall i think the article is poorly written-- jumps around with no real direction or meaning and doesn't tap into the scene in a meaningful way.

remember who reads the NYT's. you can't expect major newspapers to nail underground scenes, in one review. come on guys...

and poorly researched.

many dubstep nights and labels in the us, scion support, dare i mention snoop dogg...

all that for a sound that "barely echoes beyond the internet" in the US.

that being said, surely there will be some folks, not even typical nytimes readers, that will read this and fall in love with some new music. big ups to them!

ah, people trying to understand bass culture

on a real note, as fbom said, if it means that some kids out there will be exposed to hearing good music, then no one should hate.

they picked a shitty writer to do that article though

THIS. calling it some sort of derivative of hiphop is probably the best thing this journalist could have said. hiphop is the biggest music in this country, and people actually know what it is. If he would have wrote something along the lines of, ....it formed out of the garage scene...... no one would know what that is.

Sometimes the transitions were a little sloppy, and sometimes this impromptu duo and everyone else onstage with them — several dozen at the night’s peak — were so thrilled at the first few seconds of a song that the D.J.’s stopped it and let the crowd shout until they started it anew. That’s when another sign came out: “Rewind!”

For a genre already so given to abrasion and angularity, it wasn’t the best strategy.

out to everyone bothering to read this. i must admit, when the article first hit my desk i had much of the same reactions as all of you..

but then i thought about it. the thought that the NYT even gave these shows some attention, after how long the bass scene has been building in NYC, it means something. most people who read this paper aren't on this forum, so it's definitely an opportunity to expose the sound to a much bigger audience.

the worth of the words in the article isn't what resonates with me. its the fact that the article even exists.

out to the dubwar fam for building this shit to what it is in NYC, and even though i work there, out to LPR for getting the NYT to write this.. the paper writes up just about every classical show we put on, so i have to assume that had something to do with their desire to write this.

fair enough, but the fact of that matter is that, that's untrue, dubstep came about from ukg and i dont think its right to suddenly change where dubstep originated from just so people from the US will be able to relate to it. this article kinda annoys me because it seems like the guy just dosent know what hes talking about, he's clearly not done any research into US dubstep, wheres the mention of Noah D, Roommate, OSC, Babylon System and all them heads. made me laugh about the "rewind" bit though :)

exactly.

the NYT's doesn't cover underground music very much at all. and if they do, they just skim the surface, because they don't have to cater to things that their readers wouldn't care about. this is probably the first time most of their readers have heard the word dubstep at all, let alone mary anne, pinch, skream, benga,t&b, or dub war.
