And of course, Steve Cloutier. His work on 'Obscura' by Gorguts is breath taking.
This! I love Gorguts! :e: Tho these days more or less, nostalgically.

I know Claypool's cool but Primus can get repetitive. I have musical ADD so when it comes to fusion/metal bass I'm way more likely to like something frenetic like Gorguts.

This has hi-range cack

This will confuse the shit out of dance-music people though, guaranteed. But I love that uneven bar style of writing in instrumental music.

I feel that for dance music, hardcore music provides a better influence. Lots of Bar 9 songs are hXc riffs but with triplet-hi-hat dubstep drumming...

Most dancers have no idea what's going on when there's blastbeats.

What I got out of being in metal was the ability to write very twisted riffs and melodies. I saw someone mention AUTOPSY...some songs of that band have such bone chilling riffs that I never would have thought of until listening to them. I still model creepy synth leads after stuff I've heard in old AUTOPSY tunes.

I hate to make this a metal thread, but fuckit...ever heard the first Necrophagist release?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=572kJDIED9g - the recording, you can hear the bass better..jazz style @ 0:40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA4oq7DBU8E - the live version...what a tight bunch of musicians

THATS some bass! You have to listen for it cos it's low in the mix but dayum. He's playing everything the guitarists are most of the time.
