Re: The Blair Witch Project
it came out when I was 13, I didnt like it at the time (i guess i already said that lol)
also, this was one of the first movies that was promoted bascially through internet alone.
when it was shown in theatres, before they dimmed the lights the theatre managers would come out and be all like "ok ppl, this actually happened..." etc etc....so yeah as was said above, people thought they were watching some real shit.
to be honest, they could've kept the act up til this day, ppl wouldnt have a fucking clue. it's not like any of the actors went on to do much else in the film industry (if anything at all). not like they had to...they ended up making millions off a video cam movie.
it's also hilarious how the town the movie was set in Burkittsville MD, ended up becoming something of a tourist attraction, with fans running around the town...even though little, if any of the movie was actually shot there.
the last 20 min or so of the movie are really fucked up....they fuckin went insane pretty much. and then they come up on that abandonned house with the child handprints and shit...and then Mike goes to the basement, and then Heather goes down screaming her head off....that's like one of the most serious scenes I've ever seen, definitely.

Re: The Blair Witch Project
I never bought into it myself, I mean in reality they would never ever let something like that play in cinemas all over the world if it was real lol. Most likely it would have been in an evidence locker for many years and then destroyed after the clase was closed like other crime scene type footage. I used to ruin everyones fun with too much thinking.thinking wrote:exactly, they had a fake web site with 'quotes' from local police, press etc. IIRC it was marketed to the US as a genuine video that was found and then shown in cinemas. I imagine watching the movie believing you were seeing real footage would fuck with you a bit.999 wrote:when it was first released it was pushed as real film found and edited. i knew dudes who couldnt sleep after seeing it.
Re: The Blair Witch Project
I watched Blair Witch last night because of this thread. It's actually really fucking good.... it's one of the few non-Asian horror films from the last decade or so that you don't have to constantly keep telling yourself "it's only a horror movie" to make up for the shit acting and direction... I'm glad I can't remember the sequel at all, it was fucking shit.
Movies that scare you rather than making you jump are much, much harder... and it does it all without a soundtrack, very impressive.

Turn the lights out on your own or a couple friends, smoke if you like, that sets the scene.

unfortunately I don't think they can ever make another "horror" move like this....in this way. I've watched it every night this week lol. better each time.
the fact that you're sort of forced to imagine what's happening (the lil kids running 'round the tent, the hermit guy who lives in the house, etc) is great. none of this "here's a 'monster'....BE SCARED AS IT POPS UP WHEN THE MOODY MUSIC STOPS FOR A SECOND"
Re: The Blair Witch Project
i think it fell a bit flat over here cos we didnt have all the pre-hype that they did in the states with actually listing the actors as missing etc....i wasn't that impressed with it when i saw it, it's good but not great. if you have a strong stomach, check out cannibal holocaust where BWP got a lot of its inspiration from.

Boring at first but its alright once you get into it, i will rather watch that than a final destination or saw movie cant stand that pathetic shit. The ending is fucked up mind, whats happening the girl is screaming while the dude is standing in the corner
The sequel is bull though.

Re: The Blair Witch Project
the most overrated horror film of all time imo
Re: The Blair Witch Project
The reason why i liked this movie was because it was a fresh concept. It did scare the shit out of me when I saw it. We caught the late show and we got out like at two in the morning. We ran to the car cause we freaked out. I had to sleep with the light on that night. A week later I got lost in the park and just remembered the fucking trees everywhere. That movie fucks with your head if you get past the shaky cam shit.

Re: The Blair Witch Project
watched this again for the first time last night in a decade (wow??!!)
anywho I was surprised at how much the movie had changed due to my own experience with camping and such
I could definitely put myself in their position through out the majority of the movie...
up until the end.
the end just kills the realism by putting the kid in the corner...it was scary when I was a kid, but its laughable now because the witch would have had to "put a spell" on him and the guy who supposedly does the killing for her
someone said on IMDB that theres something special that happens at the end thats hard to notice? I watched the end in slow motion with the vlc player, but I did not find anything...
losing the map and the maniacal laughter of Micheal was definitely one of the most "real" parts I thought....especially impressive considering it was all improvised
and supposedly the actors were camping without knowing when the crew would fuck with their tent, making noises in the woods...etc to add to the realism
job well done.

Apperntley there might be a thrid one but its gonna be like the second one.. i hope not they should leave it or make it like the first, but no matter what it wont be as good. If you didnt like it turn lights off with volume on tv up high, the little sound effects are one of the best i have heard in a film before (hearing the sounds from outside while there in the tent gave me chills

I like the interviews at the beginning as well, with the townspeople and shit.
and the tent scene...it was messed how it was a mix of child laughter and some other unidentifiable noise

Like said its not really a 'shit your pants' kind of horror. I see it more of as a documentry kinda things.

Re: The Blair Witch Project
I wouldn't say I was scared by it, but I was definitely quite unnerved by certain scenes, like the aforementioned children giggling outside their tent. That would freak me the fuck out. I'd utter a short prayer unto Burial and prepare for the worst.
