Dubstep Magazine

Post by chrisquinn3 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 11:52 am

Hi all,

For my final year dissertation project I am trying to produce a dubstep magazine as I don't believe there is anythign similar on the market right now? (correct me if i'm wrong?)

Just wondered if anyone had any tips on what they would like to see in such a magazine. Would they like a section on fashion on the scene maybe? Would people prefer to see straight up interviews with DJ's and producers and would they like to see up-coming hits and maybe dubstep in the mainstream press? (such as NME's dubstep article last week)

Also, does anyone know any tricks on how to get interviews with well-known dj's and producers?

Also, has anyone got any ideas on what would be a good magazine title?

Thanks for anyone who replies to this and helps me hopefully get the first I crave!

Chris.

p.s if anyone has a copy of that NME article on their computer, I would be eternally grateful if they could send it me so I could reference it!

Take a look at Woofah, Brrrap! and Big Up Magazine, not just dubstep but with a strong focus on this sound.

I'm not aware of any dedicated dubstep mags, but many cover it.

Just wondered if anyone had any tips on what they would like to see in such a magazine.

Events, Fashion, Releases, Interviews, Features on clubs, Cover CDs

Also, does anyone know any tricks on how to get interviews with well-known dj's and producers?

Talk to them! Theres loads on here! Click members @ the top, and PM away!

Also, has anyone got any ideas on what would be a good magazine title?

Use typical words associated to the genre, something easily identifiable as a dubstep magazine. Maybe DBS

Thanks for anyone who replies to this and helps me hopefully get the first I crave!

No probs hope it's of use!

Cheers Lee, that one will go onto the list also!

Also, if anyone still has any thoughts on the content they would like to see in the magazine then feel free to pipe up with your suggestion! Even if it's off-the-wall, i'd like it to be a bit different to other magazines!

With regards to the fashion element of the magazine, I was thinking of focusing on brands that are popular within dubstep scenes.

In Birmingham, I tend to see a lot of Mishka and The Hundreds items, what do people wear by you?

for the name it has te be short & simple, something like Dubzine witht a slogan like, step into the new generation
so it's easy to remember
With a short name you can work easy with the typography, en you can drop it everywhere, (pics, images, random stuff)

& put stuf in it, like interviews, things about the hottest party's, newest cd's & stuff, updates, tips to create your own dubstep etc etc, be creative,

if you need help with designs, you can contact me, cause i'm Graphic Designer & Photographer

& btw, i would love to see a magazine in the store about Dubstep

i would love to see a straight dubstep zine. buying 10$ dnb zines for about 5 pages of dubstep sucks.
a tech section for the producers would be a must - including software/hardware reviews and first of all insights into other producers studios and their production techniques. more insights into the work of dubstep lables would be dope, too!

its a tough balance to strike for any all music magazine in this economy. magazines exist on ad revenue and sales, but mostly ad's. by choosing to put a bit more than music in the content, you can attract a whole different level of advertising. that's why you'll find that most dance music mag's do art/clothing/travel sections as well as music.
