Inspiration nights

Post by k_k » Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:49 pm

i assume most of you do this, like just plan to spend a night producing, ice everything get some drinks some munch adn dont leave your computer, just jam. do any of you just plan to inspire yourselves? like decide that you aint even gonna touch your DAW? just jam to some music, maybe whip an instrument out. watch random films or just stuff? i had proper writers block earlier so ive jsut been sat here watching random vids and jamming to music, and i feel so much better, cause im not frutrated i cant produce anything :D try it 'tis good

its starting to become random. like i was sitting on a half decent tune for a week and a half and didn't do shit. so I spent a week watching movies and two days ago I started something..nearly finished it today.

i think the whole music making thing ends up being too much of you inside your head...which is fine, but for some people *insert conspicuous whistle here* it can be a problem.

and Falty DL has become a source of inspiration...whoever this mysterious man is.

Yeah it's all about the intention you bring to the studio!!
Make a studio date and prepare for it.

Lately for me I haven't been able to produce anything, or even touch old projects. Can't figure out why, so I've gone back to playing guitar for now which has been the opposite and worked out a few songs. Think it's cause I'm stressing about not having a job and running out of rent money :(

I cant even begin to think about producing when Im pissed off or stressed..... I just end up making shite and getting even more fucked off with everything.

The essential elements of a good production session are:

1 x 8 pack chilled Budweiser
2 x pack Marlboro reds
1 x pack Rizla kingsize silver
1 x 1/4 ounce bubblegum bud (or equivalent)
The missus being ANYWHERE but in the house.
Dominos on speed dial :) (Texas bbq with meatballs FTW)

Also either turn off your phone or tell you mates/family/work colleagues that the only acceptable reason for them getting in contact with you is if someone has died.

yeah man, i know your pain. was recently in the same boat as you (and will be again soon once this temp job is over). When i first got laid off, i was like, awesome! plently of time to make music and i got enough money to last me for a few months. started up 4 decent sounding tunes but about a week into it, i realised the job market was dead and became worried, and the tunes stopped. 6 months down the line and i managed to get this temp job and only just finished off 2 tunes last night.

Inspiration is a fickle bitch. I wish it could be planned, or brought about by smoking or drinking something. I dont seem to have the inspiration I once had when I first got Reason and learned how to use it. I used to write for hours and it was effortless, the song would kinda write itself.
I think I got too tied up in following general production rules or something. These days I'm lucky if I dont get bored after an hour, and it just feels more forced...
Thats not to say I dont get bursts of inspiration every now and then, I definitely dont get them as often, and usually get them when I am unable to write too.
Those night where I am stoned and/or drunk I find it can be easy to start a new tune, but just as easy to feel like it aint going anywhere and stop.
Those nights where the GF is working night shifts and I got a big ole bag of kush are usually spent with the xbox or wii

I used to crank out one or two tunes a day for a while. then once i started learning more bout general production rules that stopped.

obviously they're necessary to know. but I get caught up in "should I be doing this....this isnt how it's supposed to be done".

It really is a catch 22, on one hand it is fun as fuck to just let whats in your head come out, on the other hand no one wants to hear a mix where some shit is clipping and other sounds are barely audible. But at the same time seems like dubstep is bringing back the experimentation and some general rules like dont pan your bass and kicks are getting thrown out the window.

yeah all the "snares must be mono!!!"

i once read (it may be on here) someone complaining about not being able to like a tune because the snare was in stereo.

it's like....really?

This is happening lately actually, i start getting into a tune, get the bassline and the drums going then notice its about 4:00 A.m, so i leave it at that, go back the next day but just cant continue what i started, I've already got about 5 unfinished tunes at the moment :u:

I hate it when that happens, you could be working on a tune you reckon will turn out sweet, maybe for a day or two adn tehn it just stops. youre leftwtih a project that no matter how much you go back to it just wont work for you and it had the potential to be a proper killer tune
