Stereo to Mono Samples

Seems like every drum hit sample I have is in stereo.

I've read before that it is easier and more effective to use mono samples.

First is it better to use mono drum hit samples?

Second, should I convert my stereo hits into mono hits?

Advise oh wise ones!

ableton has a stereo imager which I can't remember (i have waves diamond and use S1 by default). you can also export the sample, and in the export options click 'convert to mono'

you want to use the utility plug in, there's a preset called mono IIRC otherwise set width to 0%

@OP I like mono and stereo for drums, depends on the sample. if you want to try them in mono you just need to change the panning on your DAW to centre the channels (see above for Live, dunno about others)

Matter of taste really, mono isn't required for drums. Honestly I wouldn't use any stereo bass drums, although it's ok to. I don't like mono hats or snares, because it's not that realistic. Sometimes it might sound better though, depends on the particular tune and if there is any layering going on.

Mono is good from the perspective of having equal energy on
each side of the spectrum, it can be punchier as there is no
time differences to smear transients between channels.

However, there is no rule to suggest that stereo is not possible,
many hand claps have a pseudo stereo sound associated with them
it can add interesting richness. There is usually a stereo element to an
acoustic drum set as miking in stereo of the overheads is common, so you always
have a little stereo information from the overall kit.

As mentioned I would not use stereo kicks (though these are unlikely to be found
anyway)
