Do any labels take tunes on a flat fee?

Post by OiYouGetOutOfThere » Mon Oct 26, 2009 12:12 pm

A friend of mine used to do this type of deal with D&B, a flat fee of £x and sign over all rights/waves mechanicals etc to the tune. Anyone know of any / are there any on here that would do this type of deal if the fee/tune was right?

Yeah some do. I think most would prefer not to. It is usually the artist that wants to do it that way.

dont think i'd want to do that tbh. i would want to keep the rights to my tunes. and also, if it the tune goes big and the label makes millions off it and they gave you £500 for the track, your going to feel silly

Fat chance of that happening tho. Better chance you will get a royalty check for 20 bucks.

I know I'm not breaking news here, but unless you're Hyperdub or Hotflush 500 pound is more money than most tunes are worth. They could be the best tune in the world and without a label name such as that backing it, you won't shift enough copies to recover the 500 back. If anything it will be a debt.

Releases are for promoting your DJ career in my opinion.

Remove distros from that list and I'd say it's pretty accurate lol. I think most distributors probably are barely profiting, if at all.

if that is the case why do they act like they dont need you (label)?

recon distros make money..

they make more £ per unit sold than the label does (about twice as much) and they are constantly selling loads of labels releases as once..

Most labels leak money out the ass, and a good majority of them are p&d deals. The distributors front the money, press the wax and move the wax. If that release doesn't profit they lose money. Some of the bigger releases cover the losses from those and turn the profit for the distributor. They aren't making a ton of money by any means. That is why they all picked up so many labels at once. They are making the same amount as before maybe, but per label the amount is much lower.

True but it shouldnt just be about DJing - more labels should follow Hyperdubs lead and release cds with music for listening not just for dancing - its only a tiny amount of listeners that actually buy vinyl anymore and ppl are much more likely to buy a cd than an mp3
