Re: birmingham heads... lets get it sorted!
I am currently living in Birmingham and me and a friend are in the planning stages of putting on a small night. We are looking to book someone like ikonika, joy orbison, or an artist on side of things anyway, and are thinking that if we promote it properly and get the right people involved, we could have a nice little night in brum, that's different to any other night, even if it is just a one off. Just wanted to know what people on here thought about the idea? To my knowledge there hasn't been any dj's like that booked in brum so want to do as much research as possible before we go ahead with the idea.

may have to put off going home too early for this one. if you buy early they're a bit cheaper (usually what i do)
Re: birmingham heads... lets get it sorted!
Sounds like a good idea to me (wow, i managed to say something positive). I remember, about 4-5 years ago now going to see Milanese in the back area of the Rainbow pub which was small and concrete but suited the music great, however it may not exist anymore not sure. Also in Digbeth is the Irish centre which hosts a lot of gigs, but not sure if it'd suit that kinda music or how much it costs.sammyscribbles wrote:I am currently living in Birmingham and me and a friend are in the planning stages of putting on a small night. I think it's a good idea to book somewhere that isn't the custard factory or Rainbow for a few reasons really:
1. Price
2. Soundsystem (i don't think it's that good)
3. Capacity
But maybe keep it in the town though.
Good luck and i really hope it does work out because it sounds like something that'd be great to keep going!
P.S look at booking Untold if that's the vibe you were thinking because he puts on a mad show!

Re: birmingham heads... lets get it sorted!
Surprised things aren't working out in Brum, I lived there between 2000-3 and always thought the music scene was ace, I saw pretty much everyone I ever wanted to see in Birmingham during that period (mostly at the Custard Factory).
This was mostly d&b, hip-hop & electronica tho (before dubstep existed). Used to go to a lot of tech/prog house nights at Code as well, quite liked that as a venue, but maybe a bit upmarket for a dubstep night.
One thing I noticed at the time was that in the student areas like Selly Oak, there are plenty of pubs but not really any bars where you could put on a decent dubstep night (except obviously in the university itself), whereas Manchester has 2 or 3 venues in it's student equivalent Fallowfield where dubstep nights are thriving.

Re: birmingham heads... lets get it sorted!
Far too much negativity in this thread.
To begin with I am one of the promotors for Mediate and I will admit our promo game wasn't as it should have been due to various circumstances but we will live and learn for future events. We had around 450 people through the door in a 1000 capacity venue so yes we were disappointed with the turnout considering the money we spent on our line up.
Mediate merely proved something to me I already knew, Birmingham is prodominatly a jump up city. If you look at the most successful drum n bass nights their headliners are mainly jump up. Now i'm not here to argue about jump up or darkstep or whatever I am here to emphasis the fact that as much as any promotor is doing it for the love of the music they are not in this game to lose money. I'm sorry if you're willing to put hours of time and thousands of pounds into promoting events to make a loss you need your head looking at.
Clearly the most successful Dubstep promotor in this city is Breakthru/Eardrum, they have been promoting dubstep since their first event. To argue they only book "jump up" artist is ridiculous because they are respsonsible for debuting Skream, Youngsta, Geiom, DJ Madd, Appleblim and many others in Birmingham, yes Breakthru may play it safe at times but they don't make too many gambles and that's why they have such longevity. In fact if I remember correctly Youngsta played the first ever Breakthru in the Old Library. They always flyer, poster and promote to the whole city.
In this city if you want to make a return on a Dubstep night and bring enough people through the door you need to book someone like Skream, Benga, Caspa, Rusko etc. you need that "I love dubstep" customer base to get your money back. As "chin-stroker" or "elitest" you want to be, how many "heads" are there from Birmingham? I'd say less than 50. The other 950 people you need to fill your venue are people just out to have a good time, get drunk and dance to party music, that is your customer.
Birmingham has a strong scene that is ever expanding, hold tight for the next Mediate coming in 2010.

Re: birmingham heads... lets get it sorted!
I know Loe smashed it but 99% of the feedback we received from the event was about J@kes & Bar 9.
Martin Larner played one of the sickest garage sets I've ever heard to about 10 people, so demoralising!
