you can always sample tech house or deep house (or house in general) tunes....I've actually never done this but I know people who are more of the mindset "I want something that's good to go so I can focus on melody and such and spend less time tweaking things....so I'ma chop a kick straight out of the house tune and move on"

and basically, 10/10 times you have a great kick.

wow thats confusing, you're saying you have a shit ear for drums but don't you ever listen to a kick drum and think "boom, that'll work perfectically for this track!"

I personally hardly ever EQ my kicks, I only compress them when their dynamics are way to strong and the sound is to nice to scrap.

You don't 'need" reverb on hats and snares...

Seriously theres no rules, just use sounds you like :t:

Just sample your favourite snares and kicks

use more than a snare. overlay it with a clap and maybe some white noice.

try getting reasonably good at a percussive instrument...

and start with really basic drums, like just kick and snare, and straight hi hats. Then play around with one thing at a time, like move the snare around, add another hit, remove them all. Isolate each sound and see what impact it has over the overall sound of the drum beat. Same with trying different samples, choose say the snare again and try it with different sounds, layered sounds etc.

Often the worst thing to do when you get frustrated is to change everything at the same time. Being a bit more modular in your approach can be really helpful in understanding something

I used to tell ppl to do this and they would say "you dun need more than one snare"

then that Rusko tutorial came out and he was doing the same thing

big sound from 3 snares and a clap
