I rarely if ever boost the highs and mids, It can sound really nasty and you will actually loose a lot of headroom if the system is limited.
It can really hurt your ears

and if you have a track that already has quite a harsh sound in it, bad!

ON BOTH CHANNELS!
If it sounds good n dirty, remember that for the biggest drops!

If the system cant handle it it sounds totally stupid, but sometimes the whole floor shakes . . .
(im only talking a few seconds at the time in cue with the beats)

If its a crappy system you can have fun with bringing the feedback inn on one channel for extra bass and dirt!

And if it sounds good it sounds good. As long as nothing is in the red, you wont blow anything.
And unless you have no skills and a crappy mixer you will know not to over do it . . .

I know sound guys who would throttle you for doing that. Unless you personally know the settings on the amps, messing around like that is asking to fuck up someone else's soundsystem. Besides, if a system is properly eqed, turning up the bass is not only unnecessary, but complete overkill, even if it doesn't blow the system.

in all of my years of dj'ing (and Shiva has been playing as long as I have) I have never heard of anyone going ballistic on a rig like that

in KC there are no major corporate places to play dubstep, techno, or dnb... meaning if you fuck up a soundsytem you are fucking some crews hard earned investment

and they will take it out on you, one way or another

show some respect to the soundman...

chances are they take their art (building and maintaining soundsytems) a lot more seriously than you take dj'ing

I am a pretty conservative mixer. I like to be as transparent as possible. If you notice me doing something I am probably fucking up. My eqing usually consists of cutting only and usually just the bass at that. I like to find tunes that sound really good together with the eq flat rather than trying to force stuff. The trick with this style is subtlety. You may cut the bass only a couple db each 4 or 8 bars so you really don't notice it until the bass is totally gone. That's the way I do it. Right way - people are dancing and having a good time, wrong way - people are pointing at you and laughing
