Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

If you are steady mixing in a track for say 2 minutes, then at the breakdown spinback the first record, and keep the new one playing, it can sound great and there is no beats wrecked and you have something to add to the transition. People do it all the time in Jungleand dubstep sets. When people pull the tune in their sets it's usually the crowd going off and wanting to hear it. You have to understand the reggae/clash culture where this all originated from to understand why people do it. Also realize that many of the fathers of dubstep have a reggae/jungle background so that would explain why it is so prevelant in this scene. Obviously people can abuse it, and that can be annoying (the few times I saw Andy C for instance) But overall, it can be used to great effect if done properly.
This bit is true. But I think with conventional Dubstep the spinbacks are not really necessary. No1 does it in House or Techno and lets be honest about things, there are not really many people doing a whole set of Dub now days. Most of it is very techy so I think it looks quite embarrassing seeing someone spinning off a record like that just because they saw someone do it at DMZ 4 years ago.

This isn't house & techno though, everything doesn't have to be super-smooth transitions with people mixing two tunes for several minutes. Many of the djs playing the techier stuff are generally from a dubstep/dnb background where it is the norm. As long as its used at the right time & not to often i don't see a problem with it, at the end of the day its only another effect like a filter sweep

The sound of warped basslines being flung back often makes a very odd noise you can use creatively in your mix.
I have heard some nice wump's reversed slowly like this and it does sound nice, but it sounds better forward.

In my experience spinbacks are used to hide dodgy mixing or is done by people who are newish to mixing and think its 'cool'.
youre experience is very one sided in that case, goto a hype rave tell Slimzee he is new to mixing and "cool "

For the record I think there are better ways to come out of a fuck up than a spinback.

But they can be used to good effect when deliberate.

They should fucking shite on CDJs though.

in dubstep i find a lot that when cutting from one tune to the other it just sounds a bit weird, even with correct eqing and stuff, maybe just cos the next tune has less hats or less of a punchy snare, spinning back the previous track makes the transition sound better imo
but djs that spinback every mix are v unimaginative and need to learn some new techniques

btw think a lot of people are getting confused over spinbacks and rewinds/reloads, 2 v different things
Sorry but you sound like you do not really understand what you are talking about.

OTT build ups in Techno? do you mean, Trance? I only have around 2000+ records and I would not say anything has any OTT buildups.

You can cut from one record to another with most genres and Dubstep is one the easiest. You must be cutting/chopping at the wrong point if it sounds weird. Try cutting onto a snare hit and it will sound spot on most of the time if you do it on the right bar.

Spinning back a record to make a transition sound better? are you on crack?
dont patronize me sonny jim
spinning back a record has the whole purpose of making a transition sounding better, what do you think its there for, an obxnoxious noise? oh yeah you do
i meant techno had ott because they use way more focus on the build to drops, so cutting just sounds better
i said cutting for SOME tunes in dusbtep SOMETIMES doesnt sound as strong as it would for others, thats why ME PERSONALLY i like to use spinbacks

plus im obviously mixing different styles to you anyway

That is a very general statement and it did not come from me.

This is such a pointless thread. Why start a thread that basically says that his DJing style is the only way anyone in the world should mix, and anyone who does anything else is wrong and a shit DJ. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

I have not said no one can mix did I? is it really necessary to drop names of people you think can mix?

It was not put there by Technics so I wouldn't say it "is there" for any reason. It is a gimmicky thing and it many genres it is a laughable matter.

It may be cool at sound classes playing Dub but it I know for a fact that people from other genres think it is a sign of a poor DJ.

I dont care for what reason they are playing on there. I have heard bare trash mixing. There are mixes on this website right now that are from rinse and they are full of mistakes from start to finish. Same with club mixes from big name producers who cannot mix. Fingers and thumbs all over the place and no real structure or flow.

Is this really a surprise or new to some of you?! you cannot tell me you hear quality mixing at Dubstep nights from big name producers.

Sometimes, you just have to hear that drop again on a system, if the crowd is asking why deny them the rush?

I see what people are saying it doesnt happen in house or techno, but it has been staple of garage, jungle, dub, grime, hiphop since day. House and techno are all about the progressive mix, depends on what you are mixing and to who really. If a beardstroker sneers then let him, they obviously are not having fun listening to your set and should leave.
