Insomnia

Post by hayze99 » Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:49 am

How you steppas feel about insomnia? I'm a complete insomniac. Can't sleep until about 6am no matter how much sleep I've had the night before, or how much i've wankered myself (in both senses). But over summer when I go out every night it starts getting up to 8 - 10. It fucks with my uni work, and I can hardly ever sleep anywhere but my room because I end up up by myself for about 2 hours doing jack shit. But as a DJ it's purty helpful.

Anyone else?

Fuck sleep. I can't sleep for shit. Went out last night and musta danced for at least 5 hours. Powered about £70 of booze into my mainframe too. Got in at 4 and was up at 7.30(ish) mithering my mates to get Up and hit Wetherspoons for a stake brekkie. Ended up with me headphones on for about 4 hours toe twitchin' under me sheets. Not just when I go out tho. Think I think too much.

Had it since my late teens, it's annoying as fuck but the worst thing to do is lie in bed trying to sleep. Just get up and do something.

Neighbours probably think I am odd for taking the dog for a walk at 3am

comes and goes. when i first stopped smoking weed I could barely sleep. that was the end of last year/beginning of this year so it's not an excuse anymore. I sorta lay around and let my mind wander off on tangents....as they get deeper and more bizarre I end up falling asleep usually.

I operate on little sleep anyway. wake up 6-7 am no matter what

Meant to say Steak btw. Love workin' afternoons tho cos finish about 12/1 o'clock at night and either hit up the Xbox for a lengthy sesh or watch films or box sets. Fukkin' loved it when i got turned on to the Wire cos id start watchin' 'em about midnight with a cuppla beers, get addicted and be sat up at aboot 7 in the morning smokin' out me back door and texting me m8's that i'm just goin' bed while they're just getting up.
I really miss bein' a postie tho. Used to get rotational days off and was used to gettin' up at 3.30 and could never get back sleep so used to roll a big long trouser bollox spliff and fuck off somewhere on me bike to smoke it. Misty lakes/fishin' pits were the faves, frosty mornin' stylee :D . Loved bikin' home mashed/ to get mashed while everyone's on there way to deal with real life.

If you're getting to sleep at like 6 every morning, then it's not really insomnia. I went through around an 8 year stint of getting around 14 hours of sleep a week, usually 2-3 sleepless nights per week, then one day I'd just crash and wake up 18 hours later. Completely fucked up all my school and college years. Now it's not as bad, I'll sleep every night in a similar pattern to you, only really get about 1 sleepless night a fortnight. I have huge trouble sleeping, and valium helped a FUCK load but waking up after taking valium and sleeping 10+ hours is like waking up after a car crash, so I've only ever pursued the medication route as a temporary solution, and doctors are incredibly reluctant to prescribe that shit to people under 40 who don't have cancer. I had a stint on prozac which was meant to aid the insomnia and my depression/anxiety issues but it just took everything to a whole new level of terrible. I've had cognitive behavioural therapy for it too but they told me the problem was physical, whereas doctors told me it was psychological, so I'm at an impassé on what route to pursue in future. Medication is only a temporary solution, but it's the only one that ever worked. I'm gonna go back to the doctors soon to discuss 5-htp or melatonin suppliments, they said it'd be the next step after the prozac if that didn't work, but they seemed to completely forget about that route.
So yeah, fun times.

I'm so tired I can barely function all day then as soon as I go to bed I wake up and can't sleep so I'm up all night as well, end up sleeping about 3am-1pm which is shit because I used to love the mornings :(
Forever falling in love with old tunes that I will never hear dropped.

There was nothing that worked for me except taking sedatives, opiates or some illicit barbiturates a dodgy mate got me. However, all this shit was just a temporary solution, and often wouldn't net me anything more than 2-3 hours of painfully unrefreshing sleep that meant you woke up feeling more run down than when you went to sleep. I'd try seeing a doctor if I were you, insomnia is fairly subjective so there could be a number of causes, either physical or psychological. It's proper shit. Sleep deprivation makes you feel worse than any standard illness or drug could ever do.

I am drifting through insomnia hell at the moment. Mine comes and goes. It's been good the last 2 months or so but last 2 weeks I have get 2-3 hours proper sleep every second day or so. Like mentioned by Pikey, the chemical route is not an option for me. The "hangover" from valium is ridiculous for me, a truly horrible feeling in my body and brain.

I'm actually going bed and computer shopping on Thursday, betweena bad bed and spending so much time producing music it's no wonder that I can't sleep and when I do In wake up exhausted. Looking at my bed now it does look as if a few bags of cement were on it for few days... New bed and a new chair might help my tired back, fingers crossed this is the cause and solution to my sleeping problems.

A bit more exercise probably wouldn't go amiss either

mine comes and goes... its pretty simple with me really, if im doing something tiring in the day then ill sleep, if not then i wont. just that if i get out of the swing i can easily fall into a pattern of not attending work/education and it can go from there. as long as i keep my shit in a routine its all good tho.

Yeah I get this, as anyone who's read the "fuck I can't sleep" thread a while back will know. I think you've got to look at your life and change it, because it's either physical, i.e. you aren't doing anything tiring, so go to the gym or running or get a job that's physical, stop drinking coffee, tea, smoking late at night. Or it's psychological, in which case change your fucking life to something you like, if you can. Not sleeping for a day or two is a real bitch, and it's a real viscious circle as you aren't really in a state to sort yourself out if you're sleep deprived and any stress/psychological issues you may have are going to be made a hell of a lot worse. I'm not so bad at the moment missing the odd night here and there, but not really letting it bother me, I had three months on the dole recently when I didn't really have to worry about it, and that cured a lot of it. Now I'm back at work, and generally my lifes going pretty cool in other areas so it's fairly ok.

There's a lot of people in this pattern on this forum it seems, and a lot of musicians I know.

I don't know exactly where I'm going with that comment, but there you go. Enjoy it.

the sheer frustration is the worst thing

anyone tried reverse blinking? i use it to help with lucid dreaming but i don't see why it couldn't help with insomnia

Well there we have it. Insomnia = Forum use :D.

It's not just my schedule that's fucked up as someone said on here. I go to the gym every 2 days and am pretty active. I don't drink caffeine and don't smoke tobacco before bed. My brain just doesn't chill.

Good to know I'm not alone. The biggest part of my insomnia was that I couldn't wake up, ever. I'll sleep through one alarm, and even if I put on 5 I'll wake up and turn every single one of them off in a zombified state and not remember it in the afternoon, after sleeping until 4 pm. When I still lived with my folks I apparantly had really zombified arguments with them when they tried to wake me up, and then wake up later not remembering it whatsoever. Even after a good 8 hours an alarm won't wake me up, I'll just sleep a full 12 hours.

I've resorted to locking an alarm in a lockbox and putting the key next to the kettle downstairs.
