problem with ableton 8 impulse

Post by allisfullof » Mon May 25, 2009 10:03 pm

sorry for the noobness but i was trying out ableton live 8 suite, following the tutorial to make drum beats, and it says to open the impulse folder in the device browser, and to select the backbeat room preset.....but for some reason the impulse folder seems to be empty except for "current project (temp)" so im trying to figure out if something didn't install properly, or whether i need to install a pack or samples into ableton to get these presets?

any help appreciated

i think you're accessing impulse through the wrong tab on the left

i'm selecting the "live device browser" . then "instruments", and when i click on impulse there aren't any presets or anything in this folder, except for "current project (temp 1)"

in the tutorial it says

"Impulse resides in the Instruments folder. If you open Impulse's folder, you'll find a selection of drum kit presets, saved as 'Instrument Racks'."

it shows in the tutorial pic. some different presets under the Impulse folder (presets are 'backbeat room' and 'conga bongo timbales') and yet i dont seem to any of these presets in the impulse folder. i do see an 'instruments rack' folder that's NOT in the impulse folder, but those presets mentioned don't appear to be there either?

should those presets already be in that folder or is it maybe something i need to install into ableton (like a live pack?)???

Sounds like the library is missing. You might have to download it from the Ableton site. Do you get a warning message about the library when you start up? Also check in the Live packs tab in the preferences to check the demo library is installed.

no warning messages at all upon startup. and it appears that the live 8 demo is installed in the live packs tab, but still nothing in the impulse folder

anyone know whats going on with this?

I'm having this problem too.

My best guess is that Impulse isn't packaged with the demo version. I wouldn't be able to say for sure though.

I joined this page just to spread the word about this! I had the same problem w/ the demo, and then i BOUGHT suite and it STILL is empty. I think it has to do with the library not being there, but where is it then?

The library is important though. That is where all of your clips, recorded sounds and presets for live instruments and effects are.

I messed up my live 7 library when I loaded live 8. It asked me if I wanted make a new library, and I unfortunately said no. None of my presets in 7 would work anymore.

Not sure about the demo mode though. As far as the impulse, it will still work. Just load your own sounds.

BUT, when i first installed 8 suite, i didnt have the HDD space for the packs/samples, so left it. When i did get the room, i went to prefs/settings/options whatever and installed them from there...but i found no use for them myself. If i save say a Drumracks preset, it automatically goes into the Drumracks sub-folder like it should though.

Yep, sounds like the library wasn't installed properly. It's on the CD and on the website too... install it somewhere you've got space and then update the path to it in preferences -> file.

on the suite demo, most of the library seems to be there except for the Impulse stuff... no fookin clue what I need to DL from http://www.ableton.com/livepacks either, to be able to follow the tutorial/startup guide thing. I spose I'll just have to RTFM !

drum racks vs. impulse = whatever you are going for...they both have their pros and cons.

drum racks filled with impulses = genius gold

I had same problem - you have to create your own library folder in appdata - which is found in users > (yourusername) - Ableton - ect - then do this ^^^ i've only got a free version I got with my midi keyboard so i should imagine itll work with the demo -
