Re: Need A New External Hard Drive

Post by Depone » Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:10 am

Im actually thinking of getting a Raid external HD system. Anyone had any experience? or should i just shell out for a 500g seagate for £65, and mirror that.
Thing is, at the mo i have 4 HD's

One internal 160g
and two external 320g HD's (one is backing up all drives, and one is partitioned into two for my itunes library and sample library / tunes)
And i have a portable HD which is being used to transfer files between Uni and home. The thing is im real worried about this portable HD, if it dies im fucked, so i really need a solution to all these drives lurking in my room!
Ideally just cutting down to one or two 1TB HD's

Lol @ backing up 100gb of samples. You dont need to really back up all your samples or anything you have downloaded off the net imo.
Only things I backup are things I have made or that I cannot download/install from a CD easily.

Cheap HDD's here btw.

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

All my kits are custom and selected as i go. So loosing my made kits would ruin me

kits? u mean sample hits etc? yeh custom stuff that has taken u time to make I understand. But I have heard of people spending days backing up sample packs from the internet. 90% of those packs are worthless imo.

yeah dont use internals....network plus raid in two diff locations is the way to go (if you are asking the pros....)

i have all my data in a super fast network....samples projects everything....

Yeah this is true. Thats why i made my own kits. I spent a day and a half slimming my sample library from 100 gig to a banging 30gig one! Its well worth it. Streamline and your tunes will be rolling!

bit much for the majority of produces tho imo:) setting it up and maintaining network stuff may be too much.

It's often totally random what types die and what types live . . .
Have 2 of the myBook 1TB going strong
3 lacies
the western digital one is the only one i had trouble with . . .

I think its much up to the production batch . . .
Your description sounds like the power supply broke, the most common problem with all of them
Files should be there, just get the power supply fixed/changed?

Unstable power-source could be the problem, but im not an expert . . .

You never know it could be liberating. I lost everything on an external about 4 years ago. Right about the time I was digging dubstep a bit more than dnb and I just decided to start with a totally clean slate, genre and everything. Never looked back.

deadly habit wrote:yea honestly looking at what i need to back up it's only like 100gb but would like some more space, and prolly could get mybook cheap at work thinking now. they come preformatted for mac or i can use with my xp box np?
The 1TB USB 2.0 mybooks are only $109 now at newegg.com, I would imagine the 500gb to be around 60 bux. If you can get an employee discount or something even better. I would guess they are a tad more expensive in a store though, so it might even out.

They have seperate Mac editions, so I guess the regular ones are preformatted NTFS (possibly FAT32) and should work with windows right out of the box. The only complaint I have is they are a tad slow, but only for the first few seconds until it spins up from being idle. Not a good drive to use for a main storage system IMO due to seek time, but for backing up and streaming the odd media once in a while it's great. I do have some samples on mine and I always copy them over with Cubase etc because it's annoying waiting for it to spin up when loading projects.

True if they are just whole packs, but i've been collecting samples and picking the best ones out and deleting the rest for many years now.. i'm sure others have as well, so it's definitely worth it for things like that.
