hi, i'm trying to make the datsik/excision/16 bit/funtcase/..-kinda sounds for over 4 months but i just can't figure out how to make them.. this question is probably been asked millions of times here, but it's really frustrating to produce everyday when you just can't get the sounds out of it that you have in your mind.
any help will be appreciated.
Do you wanna know how to make the bass sounds they use?
Im pretty sure they use massive. Get a nice sounding patch then process the fuck out of it till you find the right sound. All about fucking around till you get it right. Bit crushing, Distortion, Filters all can be used to get more gritty bass.
I just read on this forum that excison uses random noises he records to get his morphing sounds, find or record some noises then load em up in your daw add effects and fuck around till you get sumthin soundin good, layering sounds is a good idea.
Theres also lots of info in the forum if you search for it for making those kinds of bass.
it takes a long time to get a sound you really want, tweaking knobs and finding out what stuff does and that.
90% of the time, in trying to make a sound you want, you end up making a better sound and making a different style tune than what you were intending...i do that alot so alot of my tunes will never be of the same sound.
keep at it mate, itll take alot longer than 4 months!
You can make alot of Dark Gritty sounds with THOR in reason as-well.
I like to use a SAW 2 octaves down.
Then Take another Saw at some PMW 1 octave down
add a tad chorus.
also what works really good is
the MUlti osc in Thor. Run that thru a filter and a second combi filter. You can get some real dirty sounds with that Multi osc in thor.
I didn't actually read your whole post to add mad Flanger
Reducing bit-depth and feedback/distortion/overdrive or some noise/turntable emulation will def add some grit. I have a 12-bit drumkit on my Fusion that I like a lot. Also putting your mic up to your speakers to "resample" like someone above posted is another good way. Filters are another way to cut some of the detail out of the sound.
Look for mechanical or hydraulic samples, or if you have the capability, get a field recorder and just record whatever interests you and mangle it up. Or underwater movies. A lot of them have great groans of stressed metal that can become rather menacing if used right.
Don't try to be the next datsik or whatever but try to make your own style. Don't try to make tunes that sound just like one of them, make something different.
send your bass, put a highpass on the send then saturation, distortion, bitcrush, or all three. resample. modulate. thats a starting point, cant give out too many secrets though.

not a big fan of high passing as it really gives the synth a lack of fullness...i generally find its better to fuck it up how you wish then eq it...can get an equal but nicer sound to it
well yeah theres tons of things you can do obviously people work to their own methods, i just find to give it a nicer mix high passing synths isnt the way all about the eq'ing
After some heavy processing, EQing is such an underrated process. You can get some lush sounds out of bass by taking a few freqz out...
It really is quite amazing how taking something away can give you something so huge : )
I'm having a bit of a lack-luster moment producing-wise at the moment though Sucks nadsacks.... ¬_¬
